Dean of Architecture + Design
Division of Architecture + Design
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Dean of Architecture + Design at Rhode Island School of Design. RISD, a preeminent graduate and undergraduate school of art, architecture, and design, is looking for an innovative leader to build on the 125-year tradition of art and design education embodied in the mission of the college and to help shape the vision of education at RISD.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of Architecture + Design is a member of the Academic Affairs Council and is responsible for academic leadership for the division, as well as assisting in the coordination and formulation of school-wide policies and initiatives. Central to the role of a dean at RISD is a strong commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in teaching, curricular and assessment methods, encouraging new avenues of critical thought within the disciplines, delivering coordination among all academic departments, and embracing technological advancement in all areas.
The Dean of Architecture + Design has overall responsibility for the oversight of seven academic departments—Apparel Design, Architecture, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture—with regard to curriculum and scheduling, budgetary and financial oversight, managing and evaluating faculty and staff, and use of space and equipment. The Dean leads a Division Executive Committee, which includes the heads of each of the seven departments, and is expected to provide encouragement and guidance to all faculty in regard to planning curricula, advising, teaching, and professional performance. Because many of the departments in the division offer graduate degrees, the Dean of Architecture + Design works closely with the Dean of Graduate Studies.
Deans are expected to act as a liaison between Academic Affairs and other administrative offices at RISD, to help create successful educational partnerships within the college and with outside agencies and partners, and to strengthen relations with donors, sponsors, and alumni/ae. Deans monitor the development and implementation of the college’s strategic plan, including shared technologies, and diversity initiatives.
Qualifications include: MA, MArch, MFA, MID, MLA, terminal degree in field, or equivalent combination of experience and educational attainment; substantial exhibition, design or publication record with a national/international profile; experience with graduate/undergraduate level teaching and program management; administrative experience with a strong record of service; supervisory and budget management experience; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with a diverse set of constituencies.
