Open House:
Saturday March 24, 2012
Blaak 10 & Karel Doormanhof 45, Rotterdam
Application Deadline: May 1, 2012
Our annual Open House offers prospective applicants the opportunity to meet students and staff and learn more about the diversity of research at the Piet Zwart Institute. There will be guided tours through workshops, facilities and studios, and our postgraduate students will be presenting works in progress throughout the day. Alongside these activities, impromptu performances and interventions will explore the theatrical and cinematic genre of the musical and its transformative potential through collective participation.
About the Piet Zwart Institute:
The Piet Zwart Institute is an international postgraduate programme dedicated to study and research in the fields of art and design. Named after the pioneering Dutch designer, Piet Zwart, who worked experimentally across different media and contexts, our Institute offers a rich combination of in-depth specialisation and interdisciplinary exchange in an intimate learning environment.
The courses of the Piet Zwart Institute are located in the heart of Rotterdam’s city centre. While students and faculty come from across the globe, bringing with them a variety of cultural influences, there are also strong connections to the city, its complex history and ever-changing urban environment.
We have four Master courses: Fine Art, Interior Architecture and Retail Design, Media Design and Communication and Education in Arts / Kunsteducatie. All are founded on a shared interest in the complex social, cultural and political underpinnings of each discipline. Through a uniquely tailored curriculum combining collective learning, intensive individual tutorial support, practice-based research and theoretical inquiry, our courses educate young professionals who have a critically reflective, innovative and imaginative approach to their work. Equipped with the necessary skills, our graduates not only establish themselves in their field, but also challenge and shape the perimeters of their discipline.
Public Symposia, Exhibitions and Publishing:
As an educational programme and cultural centre, the notion of ‘making public’ is core to our activities. These public moments are an important resource for students, faculty members and guests, serving as a bridge to the city, a framework for exploring timely and relevant issues, and building a community around areas of interests. Exhibitions, symposia, conferences and publications expand our research beyond the confines of academia, while simultaneously valuing the very necessary speculative space for reflection and knowledge building that is only made possible through an academic framework like the Piet Zwart Institute.
Application Deadline: May 1st 2012
