SOMA Summer is a unique six-week program for visual artists conducted in English in Mexico City.
SOMA Summer offers a series of short seminars and workshops led by a selection of renowned Mexican and international artists. Participants have also the possibility of meeting weekly with a variety of artists and curators for individual critiques. Activities are designed to promote intense creative work and artistic dialogue.
Soma Summer will introduce participants to the very dynamic art scene in Mexico City. A number of visits to museums and artists studios are scheduled. At the end of the program, participants will show their work in an open studio event.
Though not exclusively, workshops and seminars this summer will focus on the transformation of labor in artistic practice from the Second World War to the present. They will help the group reflect on the shift from a manufacturing to service economy in developed countries as well as new definitions of labor that have extended beyond all national boundaries.
SOMA Summer participants will revisit the legacy of conceptual art as a mode of production, the role of craft in contemporary art practices, and the pertinency of learning technical skills in art education. The group will also explore the possibilities of alternative economies, and look closely at the ways in which artists participate in decentralized, global networks of production.
Application procedures and a detailed list of activities scheduled for this summer can be found at somamexico.org/seccion/somasummer or via email at [email protected]

SOMA Summer is part of SOMA, an experimental pedagogical project launched in 2010 conceived to promote discussion and exchange in the field of contemporary art. Our goal is to produce a counterpoint to the dynamics of art schools, museums, and galleries.
