With Arts Abroad, you can experience some of the world’s most beautiful and historically rich cities in a new way, without having to plan your itinerary. Masters Workshop: Design History, Theory and Practice in Rome
Faculty: Lita Talarico, Steven Heller, Dr. Darius Arya, Christina Chiappini, James Clough, Louise Fili, Mario Fois, Mario Rullo, Mauro Zennaro
May 27–June 10
Rome, the birthplace of the Western typographic tradition, is the ideal location to delve into the study of graphic design and typography in this intensive, hands-on workshop with leading American and Italian design professionals. Type, book and lettering design will be explored, as well as aspects of architecture, art, archeology and epigraphy. Visit ancient sites and museums alongside cutting-edge design firms and ateliers as you learn about the classical roots of typography and practice contemporary design.

The Artist’s Journal: Istanbul

May 29–June 17
Istanbul, one of the world’s oldest and most vibrant cultural crossroads, is a city rich with history. This program unites the experience of travel with the storied artistic practice of keeping a visual journal. Daily drawing from observation on location will be combined with an exploration into all that Istanbul offers, from trips to the Imperial mosques and palaces, from the Spice Market to the Covered Bazaar, and from rooftop lounges to the waterside café of the Istanbul Modern on the shores of the Bosphorus Strait.

Art History in Southern France
Faculty: Tom Huhn
June 7–20
Immerse yourself in the beauty and grandeur of Provence, with its famed Roman ruins and Romanesque architecture which inspired Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. Explore the works of these artists and the historical and architectural influences that shaped them with daily on-site study at key locales in the region. Visit Arles, where Van Gogh’s “Yellow House” once stood, and Saint-Rémy de Provence, where he painted Starry Night. On-site lectures will also be held in Aix-en-Provence, Nîmes, Orange and Les Baux de Provence.

Shanghai Photography Workshop: Create, Connect, Exchange, Network

June 9–July 7
Shanghai has become an integral hub for Asia’s burgeoning art and photography scene. Its rich history, booming economy and interweaving of Western ideas with Chinese traditions make it the perfect city to explore new photographic possibilities. Participants will engage with the Shanghai art community, learn to integrate Western and Eastern photographic practices and experience the city’s dynamic multicultural and cosmopolitan offerings.

Products of Design in France: SVA @ Boisbuchet

June 17–27
Explore the rapidly changing field of product design in this immersive, multi-disciplinary workshop held at Domaine de Boisbuchet, a beautiful country estate in southwestern France. Participants will experiment with different facets of the design process—rapid sketching, brainstorming, materials investigation, prototyping, model building, iteration, narrative creation, sustainability and environmental stewardship—while enjoying the estate’s private lake, surrounding woods and architectural park.

Painting in Barcelona

June 27–July 14
Barcelona, the city that inspired Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Antonio Tàpies, is a place where artists have long flourished. Participants in this program will explore new directions in painting and expand their artistic vision under the guidance of distinguished faculty, while working out of the spacious studios of the Escola d’Arts Plastique i Disseny and enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean locale.

Portrait and Fashion Photography in Barcelona

July 7–17
With its exquisite light, Barcelona has always been a prime destination for editorial fashion shoots and is often featured as a background for spreads in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle. Enjoy the vibrancy of the city as you develop a professional fashion portfolio in both digital and film camera formats, and learn shooting techniques the studio and on location.

Photography in Southern France: Discover the Light of Provence
