Symposium: Remaking Research – Emerging Research Practices in Art and Design, Vancouver

November 1–3, 2012

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Registration open now: aicad.ecuad.ca

Remaking Research is an AICAD “working symposium” centred on the pragmatics and possibilities of creative practice as research, both within art and design institutions and in the context of interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and partnered relations. Investigating the philosophical provocations provided by human-centered, expressive and experimental approaches to knowledge formation and critical inquiry, this gathering will be centred around a series of primary themes and workshops, with the intent of sharing existing knowledge, showcasing new projects and contemporary methodologies, and addressing practical and ethical concerns involved in building successful research partnerships. Presentations, featured projects, and dialogue will address three themes:
The Production of Knowledge in Art and Design
The Political Economies of Art and Design Research
Networked and Partnered Research

The symposium’s keynote and plenary addresses will be given by Graeme Sullivan, Director of the School of Visual Arts, Pennsylvania State University and Carol Strohecker, Director, the Center for Design Innovation, University of North Carolina.

Panel discussions will bring together faculty and administrators from across AICAD institutions including Lisa Grocott, Associate Dean, Parsons, New School; Pamela Jennings, Director, Brenda and Earl Shapiro Centers for Research and Collaboration, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Rosanne Somerson, Provost, Rhode Island School of Design; Ezri Tarazi, Head of Industrial Design, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem; Debera Johnson, Academic Director of Sustainability, Pratt Institute; and Sanjit Sethi, Director, Centre for Art and Public Life, California College of Art.

The symposium is an ideal chance for faculty and administrators who engage with research in the fields of art and design to come together and network, share best practices, new methods of working, and the innovative opportunities presented through their work. Remaking Research will also showcase a number of Featured Research Projects. Information on submitting for the Featured Research Projects can be found on the symposium website. An exhibition of select research projects will also accompany the symposium, including PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Strategies) and the RAW DATA Project.

Space is very limited, and individuals interested in attending or participating are encouraged to register early. We welcome faculty and administrators from non-AICAD institutions to attend, and a limited number of spots have been reserved for this.

Registration is 300 CAD for the event and includes breakfasts and lunches.
