As a nexus for compelling voices and visions in contemporary art, the San Francisco Art Institute is proud to present the Fall 2012 Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series (VAS) and Graduate Lecture Series (GLS). SFAI invites students and the public to engage with these exemplary creative practitioners.

September 14: Wilfredo Prieto (GLS)
Cuban-born artist Wilfredo Prieto discusses his powerful art made with minimal gestures in the lecture More with Less.
September 17: Brent Green(VAS)
Visual artist and filmmaker Brent Green talks about his rickety folk-punk style, applying new technologies to staunchly DIY roots.
September 19: Rashaad Newsome(VAS)
Rashaad Newsome discusses how he remixes hip-hop culture and historical traditions to explore African American and queer culture, power dynamics, and social status.

Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship
Judie Bamber shares her meticulously rendered drawings and paintings, focused on issues of gender representation and personal biography.
OCTOBER
October 3: Cynthia Carr(VAS)
Cynthia Carr talks about her new biography Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz, in conversation with Amy Scholder of The Feminist Press.
October 5: J. John Priola (GLS)
In Form | Idea, SFAI faculty member J. John Priola discusses how his photography intersects documentary and conceptual art, considering the essential relationship between forms and ideas.
October 8: Mungo Thomson(VAS)
Mungo Thomson talks about his humorous, conceptually driven work that riffs on art-world figures, pop culture, science, and mysticism.
October 17: Jayson Musson(VAS)
Jayson Musson discusses his work as the character Hennessy Youngman of the satirical video series Art Thoughtz, as well as his newer work made of Coogi sweaters.
October 19: Mark Pauline (GLS)
Mark Pauline, an SFAI alumnus and founder of Survival Research Laboratories, talks about how he helped pioneer large-scale machine performance.
October 22: Sue Williams(VAS)
Winfred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Painting Practices
Painter Sue Williams shares her abstract works, whose bright colors and cartoonish shapes belie a sharp, confrontational engagement with politics and sexuality.
October 26: Thomas Zummer (GLS)
Scholar, artist, writer, and curator Thomas Zummer discusses his work in philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of technology.
October 29: Michael Robinson(VAS)
Film and video artist Michael Robinson screens his work exploring the joys and dangers of mediated experience.

VAS lectures are at 7:30pm and GLS lectures are at 4:30pm, in the lecture hall on SFAI’s 800 Chestnut Street campus.

About the Graduate Lecture Series (GLS)
As an investigation of the contemporary issues relevant to students’ full education and experience, the Graduate Lecture Series gives the entire graduate body a common interdisciplinary foundation, and plays a crucial role in defining individual praxis and the meanings of “success” within the current and future landscape of contemporary art. Students have the opportunity to meet with some of the guests for individual critiques, small group colloquia, and informal gatherings after the lectures.
About the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series (VAS)
SFAI’s Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series provides students, faculty, and the wider Bay Area public with direct exposure to major figures and varied perspectives in contemporary global art and culture. In addition to the public lectures they give, visiting artists and scholars regularly engage with students in an immediate and active way, by teaching intensives or participating in seminars, critiques, or colloquia.
