The Sandberg Series is an ongoing lecture series initiated by the new Master of Fine Arts program of the Sandberg Institute in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, Amsterdam. The series directly correspond with the new structure of the program, which explores the idea of autonomy and ‘making’ while simultaneously addressing the social and economical roles and implications of these traditional parameters of art production. The program is structured around custom modules that investigate the realms of language, image, object and performance production and representation.
The third lecture Series includes presentations by Trevor Paglen, Tim Etchells, Joachim Koester and Sissel Toolas.
Trevor Paglen (i.c.w. Creative Time)

Trevor Paglen (born 1974, US), is an American artist and geographer.
He is the author of three books including Torture Taxi (co-authored with investigative journalist A.C. Thompson), which was the first book to comprehensively describe the CIA‘s extraordinary rendition program and I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me,which is a look at the world of black projects through unit patches and memorabilia created for top-secret programs. In late 2012, Creative Time is launching a golden disc of images created by the artist into outer space attached to communications satellite EchoStar XVI. Audiences on Earth can experience the project, titled The Last Pictures, through a book co-published by Creative Time Books and University of California Press, as well as through public programs and events exploring this innovative public artwork.
Paglen holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Ph.D in geography from the University of California at Berkeley, where he currently works as a researcher.
Tim Etchells

Tim Etchells (born 1962, UK) is an artist who also functions as the artistic director of Forced Entertainment, a theatre company founded in 1984. With Forced Entertainment he has directed, written, and occasionally performed in dozens of critically acclaimed performance works that have been shown at major festivals and theatres around the world. Taking a cue from their provocative name, Forced Entertainment’s work is often concerned with the mechanics of the live event—disrupting conventions and expectations associated with attending a theatrical performance.
Etchells has developed his own practice as an artist outside of Forced Entertainment by authoring several books and through writing and performance projects with an ever-expanding group of artists from around the world. His books include a critical exploration of contemporary performance and theatre as well as an introduction to his work with Forced Entertainment titled Certain Fragments, a book of short stories titled Endland Stories, an ironic dream dictionary titled the Dream Dictionary for the Modern Dreamer, and a novel titled The Broken World.
Joachim Koester

The work of Joachim Koester (born 1962, Copenhagen) explores places where fact and fiction, ideas and reality interweave. In the process he discuss how history is constructed through the telling of tales and also the photographic medium is ultimately ambiguous. His practice mostly consists photography but also incorporates film, installation and texts. Koester lives and works in New York and recently had solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Charlottenborg (2012) Galerie Jan Mot, Belgium (2011); Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2010); Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2010); The Power Plant, Toronto (2010); Turku Art Museum, Finland (2009); and Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2007).
Sissel Tolaas

The smell researcher and artist Sissel Tolaas (born 1963; Stavanger, Norway) is based in Berlin. She studied mathematics, chemical science, languages, and visual art in Oslo, Warsaw, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Oxford. Since 1990, Tolaas’s work has concentrated on smell and the connection between smell and language/communication within different fields of science, art, design, and other disciplines.
