The recently opened Ryerson Image Centre (RIC), Toronto’s new downtown public gallery dedicated to photography and related disciplines, presents public exhibitions as well as fascinating discussions of contemporary issues, exhibition themes, and individual artists’ work, with leading experts.
A panel discussion addressing Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection, the Ryerson Image Centre’s grand opening exhibition, will take place on Saturday, November 10 at 1pm with speakers Doina Popescu, Peggy Gale, Dot Tuer, and Jennifer Allen. The Archival Dialogues Panel Discussion will be held in the Ryerson Image Centre building at 33 Gould Street, Toronto. The event is free and open to the public. It will also be live broadcast on the Ryerson Image Centre web site at www.ryerson.ca/ric.
Doina Popescu, Director of the Ryerson Image Centre and co-curator of Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection, will host the event. Peggy Gale, co-curator of Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection, will discuss the curatorial process and working with eight of Canada’s foremost artists leading up to the opening of the Ryerson Image Centre. Jennifer Allen, art critic and editor of Frieze d/e, will discuss the Black Star Collection and the joy of discovery in an archive. Dot Tuer, writer, cultural theorist, historian, and professor at OCADU, will offer an interpretative perspective on the Archival Dialogues exhibition and will moderate the discussion. Each speaker will make a 15-minute presentation, then all will participate in a group discussion, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
The Ryerson Image Centre’s gallery hours on Saturdays are 12 to 5pm; the public is encouraged to visit the inaugural exhibitions before and after attending the Archival Dialogues Panel Discussion.
Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection, the inaugural exhibition at the RIC, features new works by eight of Canada’s top artists, Stephen Andrews, Christina Battle, Marie-Hélène Cousineau, Stan Douglas, Vera Frenkel, Vid Ingelevics, David Rokeby and Michael Snow, specially commissioned for the grand opening of the Ryerson Image Centre. Curated by Doina Popescu and Peggy Gale, each artist has created new, multidisciplinary work inspired by Ryerson University’s prestigious Black Star Collection, the legendary photojournalism archive of approximately 292,000 black and white photographs that trace the social and political history of the 20th Century. Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection is on view until December 16, 2012.
Concurrently, the Ryerson Image Centre is presenting The Art of the Archive, an exhibition where Ryerson University students and recent alumni investigate time, memory and history through photographic and video images. Curated by Dr. Gaëlle Morel, artists include Alyssa Bistonath, Kyle Brohman, Julia Callon, Jenna Edwards, Tara Ernst, Daniel Froidevaux, Elisa Gilmour, Ben Lenzner, Marc Losier, Eugen Sakhnenko, Kate Tarini, and Andrew Williamson.
Upcoming events at the Ryerson Image Centre include Curator and Artist Talk Tours with Doina Popescu and Peggy Gale, co-curators of Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection, along with exhibition artists on October 27 and November 24; a special Holocaust Education Week Artist Talk featuring Vera Frenkel in conversation with Mona Filip on November 7, and a Noon Time Collection Talk with Dr. Gaëlle Morel, Ryerson Image Centre Exhibitions Curator, on November 22. Times and details are on the Ryerson Image Centre web site at www.ryerson.ca/ric.
