Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the release of the twenty-sixth issue of Prefix Photo magazine. On the subject of displacement, editor Scott McLeod writes: “In the modern era, mass migration emerged as a major contributing factor to social and cultural change; intensifying in the last half of the twentieth century, it became one of the defining characteristics of contemporary life. Today, a generation whose members may have been born in one country, raised in several others, and who study, live and work in a variety of locations, has come of age. The artists of this generation, embodying a multiplicity of identities, create work that addresses their transcultural experience in all its complexity.” Contributors to the magazine include the following:
Chen Tamir traces the trajectory of Yael Bartana‘s oeuvre, noting its consistent focus on nationalism and its evolution from relatively simple non-narrative videos to her latest opus, …And Europe Will Be Stunned––an ambitious cinematic trilogy that invokes legacies of the Holocaust, totalitarianism and the Israeli Occupation.
Elizabeth Matheson examines the role of history at Documenta, from its first incarnation in 1955 to its most recent edition, Documenta 13, in which artists engage with historical and personal narratives to create alternative histories. Using the specific examples of artists Kader Attia, William Kentridge and Clemens von Wedemeyer, she reveals that the most sophisticated response to contemporary reality lies in uncovering occluded aspects of modernity.
Ariella Azoulay examines historical photographs of Palestine from an array of archives, museums and private collections. In so doing, she identifies the possibilities and potentialities for a reconstitution of Palestinian–Israeli relations, achievable through the acceptance of responsibility for the injustice of partition and the restoration of Arab–Jewish cooperation prior to partition.
Aleksander Hemon offers a memoir of his family’s escape from the Bosnian War, and the love and fate of Mek, their Irish setter.
