The College & Graduate School of Art, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Saint Louis Art Museum invite applications for the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellowship. Two fellowships will be awarded—one from Fall 2013–Spring 2014, and a second from Fall 2014–Spring 2015.
Position: Each fellowship is open to an emerging or mid-career artist working in any medium. Artist Fellows will make two visits during an academic year—one month each semester. Visits typically take place from mid-October to mid-November in the fall semester and mid-March to mid-April in the spring semester. Artists will work approximately eight hours per week, primarily with graduate art students. In addition, artists will teach a graduate seminar one evening per week. In the spring of their fellowship year, artists will present new work in a solo exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum and will deliver one public lecture at the College of Art or the Museum. This position requires an MFA or equivalent, teaching experience, and a growing record of exhibitions and/or publications. Preference will be given to candidates possessing knowledge of and interest in historical and contemporary art issues across disciplines.

The Saint Louis Art Museum is the region’s major encyclopedic art museum. In addition to substantive collections of African, Oceanic, pre-Columbian, Ancient, Islamic, Asian, American, and European art, as well as strong holdings in Decorative Arts and Design and Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, the Museum has an excellent collection of Modern and Contemporary art. SLAM has a stellar 20th-century art collection, with particular strength in German art, including the most significant collection of Beckmann paintings in the world, as well as German Expressionism and major works by contemporary artists including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Anselm Kiefer. Over the past thirty years, nationally and internationally recognized living artists have been featured in the Museum’s prestigious Currents series. Recent Freund Fellows exhibited in the Currents series include Sarah Oppenheimer, Claudia Schmacke, Bruce Yonemoto, Ian Monroe, Chelsea Knight, and Renata Stih & Frieder Schnock.
Compensation: Each fellow will receive compensation of 6,500 USD per visit in addition to housing and transportation to and from St. Louis.
