The MFA Fine Arts Department at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City announces the Fall 2012 Open Studios. From December 13 to 15, more than 60 artists from around the world who are pursuing an MFA in Fine Arts will present new and recent work and be on hand to meet visitors. Admission is free and open to the public.

Open Studios offer a rare opportunity to experience work by emerging artists from an array of cultural and artistic backgrounds at their most adventurous. From painting, drawing and photography to video, performance and installation, the works on view represent a vivid cross-section of stylistic and theoretical approaches. At a time when society is more polarized than ever, they reaffirm the need for risk, introspection and dialogue in breaking the deadlock.

The MFA Fine Arts Department at SVA offers a specialization in painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, new media or mixed media, while fostering an ideology of stylistic pluralism. The two-year, 60-credit degree program encourages artists to follow a personal course of intellectual and expressive evolution as they experiment with diverse artistic persuasions, discover new aspects of their creative abilities and develop greater technical mastery.

Led by Department Chair David L. Shirey, the program features a roster of internationally renowned artists as faculty members, including Polly Apfelbaum, Jake Berthot, Petah Coyne, Kenji Fujita, Suzanne McClelland, Marilyn Minter, Amy Smith-Stewart, Gary Stephan, Jackie Winsor and Fred Wilson, among others.

Graduates from the program include: Katherine Bernhardt, Luca Buvoli, Andy Collins, Steve DeFrank, Inka Essenhigh, Kate Gilmore, Johan Grimonprez, Michelle Lopez, Gary Peterson, Brian Rutenberg, Sarah Sze and Phoebe Washburn, among others.
