Simon Fraser University
School for the Contemporary Arts
Vancouver, British Columbia
Simon Fraser University welcomes applications to its MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies and MA in Comparative Media Arts. With its intimate scale, interdisciplinary design, and faculty of international reputation, the School for the Contemporary Arts provides a rich environment for artists and scholars in the fine and performing arts.
Our new 125,000 square-foot location in downtown Vancouver puts students steps away from a host of galleries and cultural venues. Vancouver is known for its commitment to rigorous artistic discourse and practice. Graduate students have ample opportunities to engage with the community through placements, exhibitions, performances, and other public events. The Audain Visual Artists in Residence Program gives students extended exposure to international artists, including recently Antonio Muntadas, Claire Fontaine, Elke Krasny, Marjetica Potrč, and Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries.
At the forefront of an emergent intermedial approach to the arts, the new MA in Comparative Media Arts offers a comparative approach to visual culture, moving-image media, digital art, and performance. Seminars give students a strong grounding in new developments in these fields; students also have access to graduate courses across the university and the opportunity to pursue a practical placement. The four-semester program prepares students for careers in the arts and for doctoral studies.
The MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies is an innovative program that offers the rare opportunity for artists from across the fields of music, dance, theatre, film, video and visual art to develop their work in shared studio and theory forums. Both disciplinary and hybrid practices are welcomed. MFA students normally pursue a five-semester program of original research and studio work, culminating in a graduate artistic project. The two year program is full-time, requiring students to be in the Vancouver area.
