Experimental Exhibition of Modern Art to Challenge the Mid-Winter Burning Sun: Gutai Historical Survey and Contemporary Response

Discover the first West Coast survey of Gutai (1954–1972), a significant avant-garde artist collective in postwar Japan whose overriding directive was: “Do something no one’s ever done before.” With a diverse assembly of historical and contemporary art, including several site-specific performances commissioned exclusively for SFAI, this exhibition creates a dialogue with classic Gutai works while demonstrating the lasting significance and radical energy of the movement.

Visiting Artists and Scholars
The Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series provides students, faculty, and the wider Bay Area public with direct exposure to major figures and varied perspectives in contemporary global art and culture.
Graduate Lecture Series
As an investigation of the contemporary issues relevant to students’ full education and experience, the Graduate Lecture Series gives the entire graduate body a common interdisciplinary foundation, and plays a crucial role in defining individual praxis and the meanings of “success” within the current and future landscape of contemporary art.
Radical Directing
In fitting with SFAI’s pioneering presence in experimental film, this lecture series emphasizes cinematic approaches that veer from traditional narratives. The series is organized to complement a course taught by Lynn Hershman Leeson for SFAI’s Film program.
PhotoAlliance
PhotoAlliance, an affiliate of SFAI, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the understanding, appreciation, and creation of contemporary photography. PhotoAlliance fosters connections within the Bay Area photography community through public programs and educational activities including workshops, lecture series, and portfolio reviews.

Founded in 1871, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), a nonprofit institution, is an international leader in contemporary arts education and a vital convening place for arts communities. A small school with global impact—notable faculty and alumni include Richard Diebenkorn, Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz, Enrique Chagoya, Kathryn Bigelow, Peter Pau, Catherine Opie, Ruby Yang, Paul Kos, George Kuchar, Lance Acord, and Kehinde Wiley—SFAI enrolls approximately 650 students in undergraduate and graduate programs, and offers a wide range of continuing education courses and public programs.
SFAI’s exhibitions and public programs are supported in part by the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund. The Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellowships for Interdisciplinary Painting Practices are funded by the Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation. The Seed Fund Teaching Fellowship in Urban Studies is supported by the generosity of the Seed Fund.
