For the third year, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) launches two curatorial opportunities beginning in Fall 2013: the Young Curator Program and the Curatorial Internships Program.

The Young Curator Program offers the opportunity to propose and curate a project on the contemporary debate in architecture, urbanism, and landscape design during a residency of three months at the CCA. Architects, journalists, designers, critics, historians and practitioners in any other relevant field born on or after 1 January 1978 are eligible.

With the generous support of the Power Corporation of Canada, the Curatorial Internships Program encourages students and recent graduates in design disciplines, arts and humanities born on or after 1 January 1983 to become acquainted with the CCA’s collection, exhibition, and research programs through an internship of six to nine months in Montréal.

The initiative aims to reinforce the CCA’s expertise and leadership in architectural curatorial practice. By hosting the Curatorial Opportunities Program for the third year, the CCA recognizes curatorial practice as an emerging critical component of the architectural profession and a complement to academic programs. “Curatorial practice as it emerged during the twentieth century is being extensively recast. The tremendous change in the status of the object, culture, the various disciplines, information and education implies an inevitable transformation of the curator’s role and competences,” explained Mirko Zardini, CCA’s Director and Chief Curator.

Last year, the CCA received over 250 international applications in response to the 2012-2013 call. Carrie A. Smith, a Master of Architecture graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles was selected for the 2012 Young Curator Program. Her proposal—tracing the history of the domestic interior through the analysis of the use of houseplants in decoration and design—will be presented at the CCA in the fall of 2013. The project will draw on material of the CCA Collection, including photographs, models, films and drawings.

In addition, Victoria Bugge Øye and Alexandra Courcoulas were the selected recipients of the 2012 Curatorial internship program and are currently involved in different research and curatorial activities. Ms. Bugge Øye holds a Masters of Science in Critical, Curatorial and Conceptual Practices in Architecture from Columbia University’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.  Ms. Courcoulas is a Masters graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. Both had been nominated based on the originality of their statement of intent, potential for professional development, and connection with the curatorial direction and vision of the CCA.

The call for applications for both the Young Curator Program and the Curatorial Internships Program will remain open until 15 April, 2013, with the residency and internship beginning in fall 2013.
