California College of the Arts is pleased to announce the “Painting Expanded” symposium, which will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2013, from 10am to 4pm on CCA’s San Francisco campus (1111 Eighth Street, San Francisco). The symposium brings together a diverse group of internationally recognized artists from New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco for a daylong series of critical dialogues on contemporary painting.
Discussions will delve into issues of material, context, and theory as well as variations in academic culture, writing/criticism, and the market. These conversations will provide a social and historical framework for the featured artists’ practices and connect them to broader issues in the field. This is a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and the larger community to gather for a series of distinct perspectives on the past, present, and future of painting.
Participating Artists:
Amy Bessone
Lecia Dole-Recio
Vincent Fecteau
Keltie Ferris
Mary Heilmann
Tom LaDuke
Keith Mayerson

CCA’s Painting/Drawing Program hosts several events each semester that bring together students, faculty, and the wider San Francisco Bay Area painting community. Other programs include the Painting Lecture Series, featuring speakers who work primarily in the disciplines of painting and drawing and whose practices expand the notion of what painting and drawing can be. Another is Notes from the Studio, a weekly series of intimate and casual 45-minute discussions featuring CCA Painting/Drawing faculty (and friends).
About CCA’s Painting/Drawing Program
In today’s practice of painting and drawing, multiple approaches are valued more than ever before. We believe in the power of painting and the mark of the human hand, which are our traditional methods and craft, and we also embrace the new and innovative expanded field of painting. The traditional, the experimental, the digital, and the handmade all find a place in our community and program. Read more at www.cca.edu/painting.
