“FIAR represents a great opportunity for cross generational connection between newer and more established queer artists. I loved having the chance to discover exciting work and ideas in a setting that promoted thought and dialogue over high-pressure careerism.” –Nayland Blake
“In its second year this residency has already set a prestigious precedent…” –Alanna Martinez, Chloe Wyman, ARTINFO.com, A Guide to the Top 20 Residencies and Retreats Across the United States
Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), the first residency program in the United States exclusively for artists identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, is now accepting applications for the 2013 summer program. Now in its third season in the remote hamlet of Cherry Grove, New York, a historic LGBTQ community of Fire Island, FIAR will select five talented emerging artists to share a live/work space for a four-week program marked by intimate studio visits with, and public lectures by, distinguished leaders in contemporary art and curation.
FIAR is pleased to announce that the selection of residents for the 2013 program will be made by distinguished guest jurors and celebrated artists Jack Pierson and Mickalene Thomas. LGBTQ emerging artists working in contemporary visual arts are encouraged to apply online no later than April 15, 2013.

FIAR provides free live/work space to five selected artist residents who work, research, relax, and immerse themselves in the Fire Island community, during which time they are visited by a handful renowned visiting artists and art professionals who commune with residents through intimate visits, dinners, and discussions, providing support and feedback throughout the duration of program. The greater Fire Island community, and visitors from New York and Long Island, are invited to attend free public lectures by esteemed guests of FIAR.
Participants of the 2013 Visiting Artists Lecture Series will include Bill Arning, Director, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; artist Keltie Ferris; Steve Locke, artist and Associate Professor, MassArt; and artist Tony Feher, among others. This year FIAR is also pleased to partner with Dirty Looks, a roaming platform for queer experimental film and video, in conjunction with Dirty Looks: On Location, a month-long series of queer interventions in New York City spaces.
FIAR alumni include Travis Boyer, Ryan Brewer, Elijah Burgher, A.K. Burns, and Katherine Hubbard (2011), Nicolaus Chaffin, Brendan Fernandes, R.E.H. Gordon, Kris Grey, and Jade Yumang (2012). About FIAR
Founded in 2011 by Chris Bogia and Evan Garza, Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR) is a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer emerging artists to Fire Island, a place long-steeped in LGBTQ history, to create, commune, and contribute to the location’s rich artistic history.
Currently seeking 501(c)3 certification, Fire Island Artist Residency is made possible by the fiscal sponsorship of Visual AIDS, the generous support of Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York, and the generosity of institutional and individual donors.
