Unique amongst UK institutions, The White Building’s programme of residencies is the only programme in the UK that focuses on art and technology, enabling emerging and mid-career artists opportunities to produce new work on a major public platform.
Residencies at The White Building are supported by Bloomberg under the Bloomberg ON collaboration with SPACE.
2013–2014 residency artists include:
Lawrence Abu Hamdan. Abu Hamdan will be developing a new body of work, which considers the influence of the Druze community in the Levant—an esoteric religious group in the Middle East.
Sam Ashby/Little Joe magazine. www.littlejoemagazine.com Ashby will be bringing the Little Joe magazine to Hackney Wick, developing a new publication focused on the intersections of queer culture, technology and sustainability, and a series of public programmes.
Jesse Darling. www.bravenewwhat.org An emerging artist arguably of the post-internet generation, featured regularly on rhizome.org, Darling’s work explores the material space between performance, technology, and gender.
Fabienne Hess. fabiennehess.com Hess is a recent graduate from the Royal College of Art, and during her residency will explore the politics of images found in people’s digital trash, exploring the limits of privacy in the digital age.
Jon Rafman. jonrafman.com During his residency, Canadian artist Rafman will develop a video project that explores the relationship between memory and identity, both historical and personal. Sourcing footage from PS3 games and Second Life, the video will engage with actual, virtual, and imaginary spaces—highlighting their liminal nature.
Jamie Shovlin. Working with The British Library’s Newspaper Library, internationally renowned Shovlin will develop a project that considers the relationship between news, materiality, geography and distribution.
Jacob Stenman. A designer who uses emerging technologies to produce material objects, Stenman’s residency is supported by IASPIS.
Four more resident artists will be announced shortly including a collaboration with the Goethe Institut, London and a new partnership with Eyebeam, New York’s premiere art and technology centre.

The residency programme is curated by Omar Kholeif from an open call of submissions and a professional selection committee, which includes, Sarah Perks, Artistic Director (Visual Arts and Film), Cornerhouse/HOME, Manchester and Levin Haegle, Artist and Visual Arts Training Manager, SPACE.
About The White Building
The White Building is London’s new centre for art, technology and sustainability. An incubator for big ideas and innovation, it serves as a creative lab for artists whose work engages with technology. Run by SPACE, The White Building’s aim is to act as an international beacon for local creative industries. The building comprises a residency studio, which doubles as a temporary exhibition space, a flexible event/performance space, and studios for creative practitioners, as well as CRATE Brewery & Pizzeria.
The White Building is a partnership with the London Legacy Development Corporation. SPACE sponsor Bloomberg is the White Building’s major programme sponsor, supporting the international residencies and the People Power schools programme under the Bloomberg ON collaboration.
About SPACE
SPACE – founded in 1968 by the artists Bridget Riley and Peter Townsend, SPACE is an arts and education charity that supports artists throughout their careers. Primarily this is achieved through the provision of affordable studios for over 700 artists and other creatives, across 17 sites in 7 London boroughs. Alongside is an extensive programme of exhibitions, artist residencies, talks, screenings, performances, professional training, workshops, school and community engagement.
