School of Visual Arts presents The Masters Series: R.O. Blechman, the first major retrospective honoring the prolific artist and animator. Over the course of his diverse career—now in its seventh decade—Blechman has created such beloved and influential works as the acclaimed graphic narrative The Juggler of Our Lady (1953), the “protesting stomach” Alka-Seltzer TV commercial and the Emmy-winning PBS special The Soldier’s Tale (1984), as well as 14 New Yorker covers and countless illustrations for magazines, books and ad campaigns. His animated work was the subject of a 2003 retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The Masters Series, established at SVA in 1988, is an annual award and exhibition that celebrates great visual communicators of our time whose achievements have gone largely unrecognized by the general public. Past laureates include Jules Feiffer, Milton Glaser and Mary Ellen Mark. In conjunction with the exhibition, the College also presents an evening Q&A with the honoree. “R.O. Blechman in Conversation with Victor Navasky”—the longtime Nation editor and publisher and author of The Art of Controversy: Political Cartoons and Their Enduring Power (2013)—takes place on Thursday, October 17, 7pm, at the SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street. The event is free and open to the public.

The Masters Series: R.O. Blechman is on view from October 2 through November 2 at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th floor. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Admission is free and the gallery is accessible by wheelchair.
