Wendell Castle’s exploration of form and function blurs the boundaries between art, craft and design and has changed the way we look at furniture today. The first major investigation into his iconic and groundbreaking early work in more than 20 years, this exhibition surveys the renowned American designer’s wood and fiberglass objects, and presents related materials from his archives.
The handmade pieces created by Wendell Castle in Rochester, New York helped shape the American studio furniture movement throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and he remains one of the most important American furniture makers working today. Wandering Forms includes a variety of furniture pieces from chairs and tables to lighting and the intricate drawings from Castle’s archives.
This exhibition originated at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum to coincide with Castle’s 80th birthday and was organized by curator Evan Snyderman and Aldrich executive director Alyson Baker.
Author and critic Alastair Gordon will lead the discussion with Castle.
About Wendell Castle
Celebrated American designer/craftsman Wendell Castle (b. 1932) has been creating unique pieces of handmade sculpture and furniture for over five decades. Castle, who has consistently challenged the traditional boundaries of functional design since the outset of his career, was instrumental in helping to shape the American studio furniture movement throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He remains one of the most important American furniture makers working today.
About Alastair Gordon
Alastair Gordon is an award-winning critic, curator, filmmaker and author who has written about art, architecture and the environment for many publications including The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, Interior Design, Town & Country, House & Garden and Dwell. He is a Contributing Editor at the WSJ Magazine, and is the author of numerous critically acclaimed books on architecture, art and urbanism, including Weekend Utopia, Naked Airport, Spaced Out, Wandering Forms, Qualities of Duration, Beach Houses, Romantic Modernist, and the soon-to-be-published Think or Swim, an in-depth study of R. Buckminster Fuller.
Pierre Gonnord: Portraying the South

The SCAD Museum of Art, in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Atlanta, Georgia, presents a new series of commissioned photographs by French photographer Pierre Gonnord. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the death of Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner, the artist conducted a three-month residency in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.
Through the faces and landscapes encountered, Portraying the South captures a glimpse into the soul of the Deep South, offering a timeless, unclassifiable, explosive and riveting portrayal of the American Southeast. This exhibition was curated by assistant curator Alexandra Sachs.
About Pierre Gonnord
Pierre Gonnord (b.1963) is a self-taught French photographer who now lives and works in Madrid. Gonnord is celebrated for his photographs of marginal individuals, including Gypsies, punks and immigrants from Eastern Europe. He observes, “I choose my contemporaries in the anonymity of the big cities because their faces, under the skin, narrate unique, remarkable stories about our era. Sometimes hostile or distant, almost always fragile behind the opacity of their masks, they represent specific social realities and another concept of beauty. I also try to approach the unclassifiable, timeless individual, to suggest things that have been repeated over and over since time began.”
