The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Aaron Levi Garvey as assistant curator. He will assume his post later this month.
As assistant curator, Garvey will provide SCAD artists with exhibition opportunities in the university’s galleries and will develop exhibitions for visiting artists at the SCAD Museum of Art and spaces in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong and Lacoste, France.
“Aaron brings a fresh energy and exciting ideas to SCAD’s exhibition program,” said Melissa Messina, SCAD senior curator. “He has a keen awareness of the international art community and a passion for bringing contemporary art to students and to the Southeast region.”
As assistant to the chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, Florida, Garvey coordinated, organized and installed the museum’s visiting exhibitions, and digitized and maintained nearly 900 works in MOCA Jacksonville’s permanent collection. He assisted the chief curator in the “Shared Vision” traveling exhibition featuring works from the Sondra Gilman and Celso Gonzales-Falla Collection of Photography, and helped create the show’s catalog.
Garvey founded the artist-in-residence program at CoRK Arts District Jacksonville, yielding such exhibitions as Holy See by Rachel Rossin and Nawth Ta South by Casey James. He is a contributing writer for the Manchester, U.K.-based photography publication Of The Afternoon.
