The Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros is pleased to announce the upcoming Fundación Cisneros Seminar, this year titled “Promises of the Commons—Authorship, Copyright and Access in Contemporary Art.” Now in its third edition, the Fundación Cisneros Seminar will be held on November 15 in the Concert Hall in the Aula Magna’s Cultural Complex at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. The Fundación Cisneros Seminar is designed as a multidisciplinary space for the study and dissemination of art. The seminars are dynamic events that combine a symposium with Pecha Kucha, a short presentation format in which participants’ work is presented in a simple and informal manner.

“Promises of the Commons” will consider the array of mechanisms for collaboration and reproduction as well as the uses of the commons that have emerged over the last decades; their effect on today’s artistic production, and their impact on our concept of public and private. Presented during the seminar will be several theories and case studies that address copyright, intellectual property and access in contemporary art; positions, quarrels, and reconciliations that have unfolded at an accelerated pace in recent decades due to internet use; contemporary artistic practices and cultural projects that challenge the convergences and differences between what is considered private and common property.

“Promises of the Commons” has as keynote speaker, Professor Terry Fisher, director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Presenters include the following artists, writers, curators, and lawyers: Yona Backer, Maris Bustamante, Terry Fisher, Fabiana Garreta, Gala Garrido, Jill Magid, William McKay, Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Rafael Ortín, Lucas Ospina, Marion von Osten, Alexander Provan and Gerardo Zavarce. A complete program itinerary of “Promises of the Commons” is available on the website.

As a preamble, a workshop on copyrightby registration only, will take place prior to the seminar. This workshop will be led by Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, and is co presented with Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia.

The Fundación Cisneros Seminar 2013 will be open to the public, and admission is free. It will be live-streamed through www.coleccioncisneros.org/seminario.
