NYU Steinhardt offers master’s degree programs in Visual Arts Administration, Art + Education, Art Therapy, and Costume Studies. Study in New York’s East Village with a faculty of acclaimed artists, scholars, and critics. Our curricula integrate theoretical understanding and practice within the context of a world-class university setting.
M.A. in Visual Arts Administration
Prepare to become a leader in a broad range of arts organizations. The program addresses the whole art ecology including the cultural environment in which art and arts organizations operate, the role of the artist in society, how artwork is documented, presented, and interpreted, the structure and management of organizations that display artwork – both non-profit and for-profit – and the role of art theorists, critics, dealers, curators, and collectors. A strong emphasis is placed on acquiring the theoretical and practical tools for fundraising, financial management, marketing, and knowledge of new media and technology in the visual arts.
Art + Education
All three of our M.A. programs in Art + Education combine aspects of contemporary art, critical pedagogy, and social activism, preparing you to be an innovative researcher and persuasive advocate for the arts in schools and society. New this year is an M.A. program in Art, Education, and Community Practice designed for studio practitioners, educators, community organizers, and social activists. This innovative degree focuses on framing and supporting the artist as an activist, educator, and change agent, and offers the unique opportunity to work with practicing artists and educators in community-based and neighborhood settings. The program joins our two existing M.A. options in Art Education: an Initial Certification program for aspiring teachers, and a Professional Certification program for teachers who already have initial certification and who are seeking their New York State Professional Certificate.
M.A. in Art Therapy
This curriculum integrates psychotherapy and visual arts practice, engaging the creative power of art for clinical assessment and treatment. The program promotes scholarly research with evidence-based clinical practice, an appreciation of social justice issues, and fluency with the evolving technologies of new media art. We take full advantage of the wide variety of fieldwork opportunities available in New York, center of one of the most diverse and richly complex health systems in the country, as well as cross-cultural internship opportunities. The concentration of experts in the field of mental health provides you with excellent opportunities for internships in a great variety of renowned settings.
M.A. in Costume Studies
Focus on the history of dress and textiles in its broadest cultural context. The program emphasizes the relation of fashion to material culture and the fine and decorative arts with classes in exhibition and museum topics, theory and criticism, costume and textile history, and conservation, using collections of costumes, accessories, and related objects at leading institutions in New York City.
Our new dual master’s in Costume Studies andLibrary Science is a partnership with Long Island University’s Palmer School of Library and Information Science, in which students earn an M.A. in Costume Studies and an M.S. in Library and Information Science, accredited by the American Library Association. Gain a competitive edge in the evolving fields of information science, digital humanities, curatorial studies, and data archiving and prepare for highly sought after positions as a subject specialist/scholar-librarian in academic and research institutions or as an archivist in libraries, museums, publishing houses, fashion companies, and other institutions.
