The first in a cycle of one-day conferences on
Visions in Dialogue
“Is Man Alone?”

In a crowded world where significant relationships give way and differences become greater, loneliness increases.

The Association “Fare arte nel nostro tempo / Making art in our time” presents the first day in a series of meetings on Visions in Dialogue on the theme “Is Man Alone?” in the Auditorium at the Università della Svizzera Italiana. Salvatore Settis (archaeologist and art historian) will introduce the series of meetings. Taking part and making comparisons on the various aesthetic, scientific and philosophical points of view on the theme of solitude: Marc Augé (sociologist and anthropologist), Telmo Pievani (philosophy and history of biology), Bice Curiger (art historian and curator), Thomas Ruff (artist), and N. T. Binh (film critic). The meeting will be introduced by Marco Franciolli, director of the Museo Cantonale d’Arte and of the Museo d’Arte, Lugano and moderated by the art historian Elena Volpato.

“Fare arte nel nostro tempo / Making art in our time” is a private, non-profit association founded in November 2012. The series Visions in Dialogue, conceived and organized by the Association in collaboration with the Museo Cantonale d’Arte in Lugano, proposes a series of day-long conferences—at least twice a year and open to the public—on themes that reflect on some aspects of the visual arts and on the state of being in today’s world through the vision of some experts from different disciplines. Art and identity, art and culture, art and method are the underlying theme where an artist, an art historian, a philosopher, a sociologist, and a scientist compare their points of view in open debate. A contribution to the adventure of knowledge on current and universal themes that afford the possibility of diverse and antithetical interpretation as well as convergence points, on the premise that complexity is not only in the things but also includes the point of view of those who observe.

“Today we perceive a condition of uncertainty generated by the rapidity of the changes taking place—says Cristina Bettelini, president of the Association—being conscious of this uncertainty can produce negative effects, but has the positive effect where, in order to hypothesise scenarios, you have to think in a multi-dimensional way. Uncertainty generates the need for truth; faced with contradictory data and simplistic hypotheses, ways of thinking have to reorganise themselves on many levels, creating bridges between that which is apparently disjointed, concentrating themselves on the particular and, at the same time, situating themselves in the totality that it encompasses.”

The one-day conferences will take place twice a year. The next meeting on the theme “The Crowd will take place on Saturday 12 April 2014. Thereafter The Rapport Between Observer/Observed in the autumn of 2014 and How to Interpret Time? In the spring of 2015. The objective is to complete the series of Visions in Dialogue on ten themes with the same number of meetings.
