Set in the magnificent landscape of the foothills of the San Bernardino mountains, the MFA program at UC Riverside is an unusual combination of a theoretically driven curriculum that also prioritizes studio production. The small size and high selectivity of the program allows for a deeply engaging interaction between the nationally and internationally exhibiting faculty members and the handful of students admitted per year. The curriculum is non-media specific, meaning that students are encouraged to pursue their aesthetic ideas in whatever media that most suits them, without the dogma that can accompany traditional approaches to media or the didacticism associated with work that prioritizes illustration of texts.
UC Riverside offers an intensive environment of advanced art research and practice for highly motivated students. The intimate scale of the program allows for regular peer reviews and opportunities for teaching practicum. Regular lectures and studio visits from internationally recognized artists, curators and critics broaden and intensify the discourse among students and faculty. The department offers excellent state of the art facilities and as a leading research university, the students are encouraged to avail themselves of the opportunities provided by courses in other programs and departments. Expected time to degree is three years with an option for two year completion.
