The progamme
The Master of Education in Arts programme explicitly connects theory and practice, focusing on contemporary issues which span different practices and discourses (visual art, design, art institutions, art criticism, cultural theory, pedagogy, philosophy). Students are encouraged to critically reflect upon their own position and teaching methodologies within social, cultural and political contexts.
How can educators help to define the role of art and design in society? Which pedagogical methodologies are appropriate for specific audiences and contexts? What do developments such as ‘education-as-art’ and ‘the educational turn’ mean for curricula within schools and universities, or for educational programmes in museums and galleries? How can art education help children grow up to become self-confident and emancipated adults? These are but a few of the questions that are at the core of the Piet Zwart Institute’s Master of Education in Arts programme.
The course is mainly based on intensive seminars and workshops led by a dedicated group of artists, educators, critics, curators and theorists. Through a uniquely tailored curriculum combining collective learning with individual tutorials, practice-based research and theoretical enquiry, our course focuses on educating professionals with a critically reflective, innovative, questioning, and imaginative approach to their work.
The curriculum is designed specifically for cultural workers, artists, designers and teachers working in (higher) education, or with an educational practice within the cultural sector. Depending on a student’s particular background, interests and educational qualifications, the programme prepares graduates to engage with formal educational structures, such as schools and universities, as well as informal learning environments, such as free schools, skill-sharing workshops and community-based projects. Pedagogical methodologies range from active field work to theoretical research, interpretive methods, and the exploration of newly emergent forms of digital didactics. In addition, the Master Education in Arts programme strives reach out and build relationships outside the academy via institutional partnerships and through individual initiative.
In order to attract and accommodate working professionals seeking to upgrade or enhance their professional practice, the programme is structured as a 60-credit part-time course spread over two years. Upon fulfilling credit requirements, students graduate with a Master of Education in Arts (M Ed).
Recent and future (guest) tutors and speakers include Eylem Aladogan (artist), Prof. Dennis Atkinson (Goldsmiths, University of London), Priscilla Fernandez (artist), Michelle Williams Gamaker (artist and researcher), Talita Groenendijk (PhD, teacher and researcher art education), David Jablonowski (artist), Sophie Krier (teacher, designer), Prof. Jan Masschelein (Laborary for Education and Society, KU Leuven), Levien Nordeman (teacher, researcher New Media, Culture, Society), Wendelien van Oldenborgh (artist), Paul ‘O Neill (curator, educator, director master programme CCS Bard), Maaike Roozenburg (designer), Jonas Staal (artist), Mirjam van Tilburg (artist, researcher art education), Tom Vandeputte (PhD, researcher, writer, editor) Sjoerd Westbroek (artist and teacher) and more to be announced.
