The School of Art+Design at Purchase College, SUNY invites applications for two searches for photographic artists/educators at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor and a Visiting Assistant Professor beginning in the fall of 2014. Candidates must display enthusiasm, experience, and commitment to arts education within a BFA program in photography with opportunities to work with cross-disciplinary BFA, BA/BS and MFA programs within the visual arts.
We are seeking practicing photographic artists with a national or international exhibition record and expertise in both digital and analog processes pertaining to photography. Successful candidates will be artists who work and think expansively and critically regarding the status of the photographic image and its ongoing and shifting relationship with the world at large. Special attention will be given to artists that supplement the above expertise with other areas of interest and practice. This may include but is not limited to video and the projected image; photographic history and critical theory; creative narrative strategies that integrate photography with the humanities and liberal arts; as well as independent artist books and publications.
Teaching assignments will include all levels of photography as well as alternating courses determined by practice, scholarship, experience and need. Responsibilities include teaching five course units per academic year as well as sponsoring individual undergraduate and graduate projects and independent study. Courses may include core seminars, studio electives, photographic history, critique seminars, cross-disciplinary courses with the arts or liberal arts, as well as foundation courses.
Our ideal candidate will be comfortable working and thinking across disciplines, having interests and experience that extend beyond her or his specialty, and encompass broader contemporary approaches to artistic practice and human knowledge. Successful candidates will demonstrate their commitment to student learning, success, and liberal education.
Founded on the principle that artists and scholars are indispensable to each other and to an enlightened society, Purchase College combines professional conservatory programs in the visual and performing arts and distinguished programs in the liberal arts and sciences. Located 25 miles north of Manhattan in Westchester County, the campus celebrates individuality, diversity, and creativity as we encourage students to “Think Wide Open.” At Purchase College, the arts play a special role—liberal education infuses the arts and the arts infuse the campus. Purchase College is part of the State University of New York system.
