Low Residency MFA in Illustration, Program Director – Murray Tinkelman
Our low residency format provides working illustrators, educators, and freelance illustrator/designers an opportunity to work with the best illustration educators in the United States. Our students pursue an MFA in Illustration while continuing with their careers, lives and commitments. Over a timespan of two years and three summers, our students refine their skills and techniques, expand their creative intellect, and shape their illustration business into a career.
The program couples intensive on-campus sessions during the summer with an off-campus travel component in the fall (November) and spring (March). The three two-week summer sessions meet at the Hartford Art School/University of Hartford, during which students and faculty interact inside and outside the classroom. Summer coursework includes History of Illustration, Advanced and Digital Illustration, Children’s Book Illustration, Business Promotion, Entrepreneurial Skills & Social Networking for your career.
The fall and spring sessions meet for one week at select off-site locations where substantial numbers of high-profile illustrators work and reside (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas). Guest professionals present their work to our students and conclude with an open discussion relative to their work and the illustration profession at large. Students share in the expertise of these presenters and gain insight into the similarities and differences illustrators face in different markets and regions of the country.
During the times between scheduled contact periods, students complete course assignments and maintain regular, ongoing contact with their Thesis Advisor and the Program Director via phone and other electronic means.

Application process:
1. Complete an extensive phone interview with Program Director Murray Tinkelman.
2. Submit a website or send a CD with at least ten published images for review.
3. Complete the online application.
Please note: all applicants must already have a recognized baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. Students who earned their degree outside of the USA will use the World Education Services (WES) to validate their transcripts. In addition, international students are required to have completed the TOEFL unless waived by the director of the program.
