NSCAD University, formerly the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, is an internationally recognized centre for the study, practice, and teaching of visual arts. Canada’s first arts school, NSCAD celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2012. Today, the university offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in fine and media arts, craft, design, art history and critical studies, as well as an ambitious array of Extended Studies courses. NSCAD alumni/ae are among Canada’s most highly regarded artists, gallery directors, designers, curators, and art educators; they are well-represented in arts organizations around the globe.
NSCAD University is currently seeking its next President. The President reports to the Board of Governors and is responsible for directing the academic, financial, and administrative activities of the University. The President oversees the financial and strategic plans while delivering student–focused excellence in academic instruction and research. The President leads the University in achieving its goals while directing the overall operations of the institution and overseeing the development, delivery, and assessment of NSCAD programs and services. The President will inspire a climate of collaboration and open communication across the NSCAD community and will encourage and support diverse academic and artistic discourse to ensure excellence in contemporary visual arts education. As chief spokesperson, the President will sustain and develop effective working relationships with various external communities.
The ideal candidate understands NSCAD’s unique place in Canada and the art world and will build on the institution’s reputation and position from local to national and international arenas. The successful candidate enjoys a reputation for successful executive and administrative leadership in a higher education institution or an institution of equivalent complexity and diversity. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to work with others to establish a bold vision, and will provide direction, clarity, and inspiration to ensure NSCAD continues to be the Canadian university of choice for outstanding and ambitious arts students, faculty and staff from around the globe. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a passion for higher education, research, and the arts, as well as a track record of solid organizational and fiscal management. NSCAD’s next president will be committed to collegiality and transparency, capable of facilitating productive relationships with key stakeholders, in order to ensure a financially secure and intellectually robust future for the University.
