As the practice of interior design grows more sophisticated, so too must the education of designers. NYSID’s five graduate programs produce future design leaders who can synthesize the conceptual and practical to change the way we live.

NYSID’s LEED-Platinum-certified Graduate Center, at Park Avenue South and 28th Street, is situated in a vibrant center of design, near countless design studios and furnishing showrooms. The sleek, light-filled space has an open layout with seminar rooms, lecture halls, exhibition space, computer design labs, and other workspaces all flowing into each other.

MFA in Interior Design, Professional Level (MFA-1)
This three-year program is structured to provide an advanced interior design degree to students who have a baccalaureate degree in a field unrelated to design. A portfolio is optional for admission.

The program, which is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), emphasizes research and analysis applied to a wide range of user groups, taking into account global practice, sustainable design, and social responsibility. MFA-1 students learn the foundations of interior design—from the history of the profession to sketching and hand-drawing to the latest software programs such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit. The program requires full-time study.

MFA in Interior Design, Post-Professional Level (MFA-2)
This two-year, terminal degree program provides professionals in interior design, architecture, environmental design, and closely related fields with the opportunity for advanced creative and academic scholarship in interior design. MFA-2 is the most conceptual program at NYSID. Students graduate with a deep understanding of the nature of design of the built environment, the ability to articulate and resolve advanced problems in design, and are prepared to become leaders of the profession. The program requires full-time study.

Master of Professional Studies Programs
NYSID’s MPS programs are designed to give working designers a competitive edge through specialized skills and in-depth knowledge of a particular aspect of interior design. The one-year programs cater to the working professional with all classes offered in the evenings and on weekends.

MPS in Healthcare Interior Design
The healthcare industry is rapidly expanding to accommodate the growing needs of the aging baby boom generation and the global population explosion. In response, NYSID has created a unique, interdisciplinary program that provides practicing designers and healthcare professionals an opportunity to work together and to acquire a broad knowledge of current issues, research, and theory in the design of healthcare interiors and apply it in focused studio experiences.

A portfolio is required for those with a design background; optional for those with an extensive background in healthcare.

MPS in Sustainable Interior Environments
Sustainable practice in interior design is no longer a choice; it is the future of the profession. This program is structured to prepare design professionals to assume leadership roles in developing and maintaining sustainable interior spaces that will positively impact the world.

The program provides students with a thorough grounding in the best practices in environmentally informed designs for the interior. Students are exposed to a wide range of topics, research methods, integrated design development methodologies, and sustainable project management practices.

MPS in Interior Lighting Design
As any interior designer or architect can tell you, imaginative and cost-effective interior lighting is critical to the success of any interior space.  This program provides rigorous professional education in the area of natural and artificial illumination for the interior environment, with a curriculum that balances conceptual and practical techniques. Changing technologies, new laws that mandate energy efficiency, and the demand for inspired, innovative solutions have created a strong need for specialists in interior lighting design.
