The Universe and Other Systems with Shary Boyle
Program dates: July 7–August 15, 2014
Application deadline: February 5, 2014
Lead artist: Shary Boyle, with guest artist Daniel Barrow
Shary Boyle invites participants to come to Banff and spend time quietly working alone, walking in the woods, and engaging with each other away from urban stress and the pressures of professional competition. The Universe and Other Systems is an opportunity to truly experience the silence and reflection offered by the mountains, trees and rivers, and to imagine and explore new worlds of artistic practice.
Participants are asked to bring examples or readings of inspirational alternatives to conventional contemporary art practice for discussion. All manners and approaches toward art-making are welcome, with a special invitation to indigenous artists.
Shary Boyle is well known for her bold and fantastical explorations of the figure. Fuelled by concerns about class and gender injustice, Boyle approaches her work with an expressive candor and compassion; exploring a range of psychological and emotional states through sculpture, drawing, painting, installation and performance.

Confuse the Cat with Michael Portnoy and Ieva Misevičiūtė
Program dates: September 15–October 24, 2014
Application deadline: March 5, 2014
Lead artists: Michael Portnoy and Ieva Misevičiūtė, and other guests
The more confounding cousin to Portnoy and Misevičiūtė’s Experimental Comedy Training Camp, Confuse the Cat is a seven-week refuge for those trafficking in the hazy arts of obfuscation, what-the-fusking, overloading, disorientation, misdirection, bungling, charlatanism, and all manner of code-switching, rug-pulling and dizzying shifts of register, style, content, and framing. Maximalists, word fiends, riff and reversal addicts, mutant gesture farmers, step up out of your holes!
The aim of this residency is to provide a rich mud for the exploration of the poetics of confusion; approached through various group training methods and individual studio practice. Weekly workshops combining a number of theatre, dance, and performance techniques will develop your tools for presence, expressivity, and intuition. We will dive into an exploration of words and ideas—where ideas are not born out of research and excavation but engineered and souped-up in real time.
While envisioned through a performative lens, this residency is open to artists working in all disciplines.
