Northeastern University’s MFA in Information Design and Visualization

The two-year, 60-credit-hour MFA in Information Design and Visualization is an interdisciplinary program centered on the analytical and visual communication of information. We invite applicants with diverse backgrounds and an interest in data-driven visual methods and their application for socially relevant issues in the professional environment, the sciences and humanities. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaborative work with researchers, students and faculty to enable the better understanding and design of human and urban experience.

The program, built upon a core of graphic and interaction design, has established collaborations with numerous cutting-edge research initiatives in the Boston area, including digital humanities initiatives such as the NULab for Texts, Maps and Networks, the Center for Complex Network Research (Professor Albert-László Barabási), the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy, as well as research initiatives on Computational Social Science (Professor David Lazer).

Our first-rate faculty includes a legendary pioneer in the field, Richard Saul Wurman, Isabel Meirelles, who has recently authored the acclaimed book Design for Information, Hugh Dubberly, Nathan Felde, Ann McDonald, Dietmar Offenhuber (recent book Accountability Technologies), Alessandra Renzi, Douglass Scott, Thomas Starr, and Gloria Sutton.

Northeastern University is a dynamic and growing major global research university located in a rich environment for education and a vibrant center of culture and innovation. Our professional community of interest is strong and connected throughout the worlds of information, design, data and visualization.

Please contact the coordinator of the program, [email protected], with your questions, or to set up a visit to our campus in Boston. Applications received by February 1 will have priority for fall 2014 admission. Applications received after that date will be reviewed in the order received, space permitting. Detailed application and portfolio requirements can be found on the program website. Detailed application and portfolio requirements can be found on the program website at www.northeastern.edu/visualization.
