The New Art Center’s Curatorial Opportunity Program (COP) investigates contemporary culture through the visual arts. It makes possible diverse curatorial visions in a non-profit and alternative exhibition space.
This open-call program for curatorial proposals is currently accepting applications. Applicants are invited to experiment in a large, unique and alternative space. The program encourages the development of emerging curators and artists as curators. Our gallery is a converted church with 1,800 square feet and a 25-foot vaulted ceiling. We accept proposals involving two or more artists and at least one public presentation. Curators of accepted proposals receive a 1,000 USD stipend and administrative, installation, marketing & p.r. support.
The New Art Center has a 35-year tradition of using its Main Gallery for group exhibitions curated by an exhibiting artist or independent curator. Since May 1991 we have continued this tradition through a public call for proposals in our Curatorial Opportunity Program.
The New Art Center in Newton, Massachusetts (a non-profit corporation) is Boston adjacent and provides opportunities for people to connect with their creativity, community and history through artistic experience. The Center offers classes and educational experiences for all ages about enjoying, making, curating and understanding visual art.

Anna Stothart, Assistant Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, will present at the New Art Center with John Andress, Public Programs Manager at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston.
The Curator Workshop & Information Session brings an interested public together with curatorial professionals to learn about curating contemporary art, to increase dialogue in curatorial ideas and to promote the New Art Center’s Curatorial Opportunity Program (COP).
Featured speaker Stothart will discuss her recent and in-process curatorial projects and her approach to creating contemporary art exhibitions. Stothart will be joined by Andress to focus on the importance of cross disciplinary programming and performance in curatorial practice today. They will present how they activate exhibitions at the ICA/Boston through programmed interactions with the art and various audiences.
Following their presentation, New Art Center staff will lead a question-and-answer period on the proposal submission process.
About the Workshop Presenter
Anna Stothart is the Assistant Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. She organized the current installation of the ICA Collection Expanding the Field of Painting and the one person exhibition of Mickalene Thomas. She has coordinated the ICA installation of the traveling exhibitions LaToya Ruby Frazier: WITNESS and Ragnar Kjartansson: Song. She has also assisted on a number of exhibitions including: Damian Ortega: Do it Yourself (2009); Charles LeDray: workworkworkworkwork (2010); Catherine Opie: Empty and Full (2011); Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall: Swoon Anthropocene Extinction (2011), Figuring Color: Kathy Butterly, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Roy McMakin, Sue Williams (2012) and Amy Sillman: one lump or two. She received her MA in Art History and Museum Studies from Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts.
