Once a year the Städelschule opens its doors to the public. For three days the art students display their current works in their studios. Video artists and filmmakers show recent productions in the German Filmmuseum in Frankfurt, the Architecture Class exhibits in the Städelschule and nearby at the independent exhibition site Platform Sarai and the Curatorial & Critical Studies Programme conducts a wide lecture and interview programme in the school’s lecture hall.
The Rundgang has become one of the most popular art events in Frankfurt. In 2013, more than 15,000 visitors took the opportunity to get to know the Städelschule, its professors and students and see their work. In 2014 around 190 students from the classes of Douglas Gordon, Judith Hopf, Michael Krebber, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij, Peter Fischli, Monika Baer, Johan Bettum, Ben van Berkel and visiting faculty member Mark von Schlegell exhibit their works in their ateliers.
The Städelschule dates back to 1817 and is amongst the leading art academies worldwide, offering degrees in fine art, architecture and curatorial critical studies. Its acclaimed international faculty attracts a unique student body with over 70 percent of students from abroad.
Furthermore, guest professors, external lecturers and visiting tutors make for a diverse range of teaching formats. Since 1987, the exhibition programme of Portikus Gallery has been an integral part of Städelschule, adding to the school’s teaching syllabus and international reputation. It has developed into a leading centre for contemporary art in Germany and beyond, with a rich history that features more than 180 exhibitions to date.
