Janice Kerbel, Revolutionaries, 2013. Pigment print on photo rag paper, 23.5 x 18 inches.
Revolutionaries is a modified excerpt from ‘Three Ring,’ a larger series by Janice Kerbel that takes the antiquated form of the broadside into account to describe the acts on the centre stage of a circus. This work demonstrates the artist’s playful and acute sense of language in both its present and outmoded use.
Kerbel works with a range of materials, including drawing, text, audio and print, to explore the indefinite space between reality and fiction, and between abstraction and representation. Her work frequently involves extensive research, and takes the form of plans, proposals, scripts or announcements for imaginative scenarios that cannot or will not actually happen.
Kerbel’s work has been exhibited at Tate Britain, Chisenhale Gallery, and greengrassi, London; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff Centre; Artspeak Gallery, Vancouver; and I8 Gallery, Reykjavik. Her radio play Nick Silver Can’t Sleep, commissioned by Artangel, was broadcast by BBC Radio3 in 2006.
‘Revolutionaries’ is the fifth in the READ Editions series, published by READ Books in an edition size of 50. Works by Rodney Graham, Neil Wedman and Babak Golkar are also available. All works in the series are priced at 500 USD. For further information please visit [email protected].
Dan Graham
Nuggets: New and Old Writing on Art Architecture and Culture
The texts in Nuggets span the years 1967 to 2011 and articulate ideas around a broad range of topics including Conceptual art, Minimalism, architecture and design, and reflect Dan Graham’s long-standing interest in structures of knowledge, systems of representation and modes of interaction or self-perception for the viewer. The book includes essays on the work of Carl Andre, Atelier Bow Wow, John Chamberlain, Joe Colombo, Darcy Lange, Claes Oldenburg, Jeff Wall and Peter Zumthor, and features an extensive interview with Itsuko Hasegawa in which her major public works are discussed in relation to Graham’s recent glass and mirror structures.
Dan Graham is a highly influential figure in the field of contemporary art, both as a practitioner and as a well-respected critic and theorist. Focusing on cultural phenomena, and incorporating photography, video, performance, glass and mirror structures, Graham’s practice has become a key part of the Conceptual art canon.
Nuggets is co-published by JRP|Ringier (Zurich), Les presses du réel (Dijon), and Emily Carr University Press (Vancouver).
