The Davidoff Art Initiative has announced its upcoming events and programs for 2014. Launched in 2012, the Davidoff Art Initiative aims to support contemporary art and artists in the Caribbean and Dominican Republic and foster cultural engagement between the Caribbean and the rest of the world. The Art Initiative is built on the importance of giving back to the cultural community where many employees and much of the production of Davidoff Cigars are still located.
Davidoff Art Residency
Following the launch of the first residency program in New York, the Davidoff Art Initiative will host two Dominican artists for the Davidoff Art Residency this spring. Dominican artist Jorge Pineda will attend a three-month residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin from April to June 2014 and Dominican artist Pascal Meccariello will attend the Red Gate Gallery Residency in Beijing from May and June 2014.
The application process is also currently open for the next Dominican or Caribbean artists to take part in the Davidoff Art Residencies at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York City in fall 2014 and at Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin in spring 2015. Ferreras De la Maza was based at ISCP from September 1 through November 30, 2013 and participated in the ISCP open studio visit in November 2013.
“I am very grateful to the Davidoff Art Initiative for giving me this opportunity to explore and develop my art in a new environment,” said Ferreras De la Maza. “It was exactly what I needed and gave me the energy to grow in directions I could not have imagined. I am excited to use these experiences to inspire my work moving forward.”
Davidoff Art Weekend
In collaboration with Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design in La Romana, Dominican Republic, the Davidoff Art Initiative is continuing preparations for a residency program for international artists in La Romana. The annual residency for emerging and mid-career international artists from around the world is launching in January 2015 at Altos de Chavón.
“To mark the establishment of the Davidoff Art Residency for international artists, we are delighted to host with Central Romana, Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation, and the Davidoff Art Initiative, the first Davidoff Art Weekend from February 28 through March 2, 2014 in the Dominican Republic. With this Initiative we hope to bring opportunity and visibility to the art and culture of the Caribbean region and build a strong network in the Caribbean and also between the Caribbean and the world,“ said Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard, CEO and President Oettinger Davidoff AG.
The weekend is by invitation only and will include dedication of the cornerstone for new artist studios for the residency, meetings with the Dominican arts community in the city of Santo Domingo, and a series of panel discussions at Altos de Chavón.
Davidoff Art Dialogues
The Davidoff Art Initiative will host its first 2014 Art Dialogue titled, “The View from the Other Side: International Arts Organizations Engage with Latin America.” The panel discussion will take place during ARCO Madrid 2014 on Saturday, February 22 from 6–7:30pm. Moderated by András Szántó, Chief Consultant to the Davidoff Art Initiative Art Advisory Committee, the participants will include Irene Hofmann, Director and Chief Curator of SITE Santa Fe and Biennial Director of the upcoming series, SITElines, Paloma Martin Llopis, Collector and Latin American market expert, Julieta González, Senior Curator at the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City and Adjunct Curator at The Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York, and Pablo León de la Barra, Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, Latin America.
“The Davidoff Art Initiative is pleased to be invited to be a part of the prestigious programming during ARCO Madrid,” said Szántó. “Davidoff has a long-term commitment to supporting the art and artists of the Dominican Republic and Caribbean. It is exciting that many international institutions are currently engaging Latin American artists from an academic and curatorial perspective. By facilitating a dialogue about contemporary Latin American art on the global level, we are helping to bring critical attention to the region. In turn, we are also giving support to its own art organizations and artists.”
