The Trans Master program is addressed to artists interested in transmission and who wish to explore the options in art education and mediation through partnerships with cultural and social institutions.
Trans invites students to:
– Develop their own artistic work while taking into consideration the personal background and specific features of the work of individual students.
– Explore the possibilities of art education and education through art, both on a formal and informal basis.
– Develop and implement broad-based mediation projects: support exhibition or artist projects, publications, curators of exhibitions, etc.
– Explore the artist’s role in society and his/her contributions to education and mediation.
The Trans program aims to train artists committed to social issues who are aware of political and societal issues and capable of inventing new forms of transmission based on their artistic experiences and on their worldview. ‘Artist mediation’ and ‘artist mediator’ are concepts that are still vague and only just being defined. Although they differ from the profiles of cultural mediators and museum educators, they share some of the same questions. While art and cultural heritage mediation is based on pluralism and portrays the different audiences, Trans invites students to become involved in debate on theoretical issues (which are published in an annual review), and, in a more hands-on approach, to undertake various projects. Some of these projects are carried out in partnership with art institutions such as the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Mamco) in Geneva and the Val-de-Marne Contemporary Art Museum (Mac/Val) in Vitry-sur-Seine, multi- disciplinary festivals such as les Urbaines in Lausanne or LiveInYourHead, Curatorial Institute at Geneva University of Art and Design, Geneva.
These projects involve active research that provides food for broader reflection. They are also built around the students’ personal work, which is nourished and stimulated by encounters with artists, workshops, and trips.
