The low-residency MFA in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts is an immersive two-year graduate program that synthesizes five intense, one-week residencies with four six-month semesters of independent study with a range of faculty advisors. We educate students towards the broader context of design in order to investigate and reveal relationships. We see Graphic Design as a social tool and design education as a process of social transformation.
At Vermont College of Fine Arts our faculty and students are part of important conversations about the field of Graphic Design. In her lecture titled “Where’s the Black in Graphic Design?” MFA in Graphic Design faculty member Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton explored the absence of African-Americans in the discipline.
“I went on this huge journey to find the black aesthetic in graphic design. In general, people have a tendency to look for a career where they think they can relate to people or they know there are people that are similar to them that have been successful in that area. So I think graphic design can be the same way if it were a bit more diverse.” She continues to build on this concept in her career and her practice.
