The Hunter College Department of Art and Art History is pleased to announce a public lecture by Julie Ault, the spring 2014 Judith Zabar Visiting Artist, Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 7pm in the Lang Recital Hall, located in the Hunter North Building, entrance on East 69th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues in Manhattan.
Julie Ault is an artist, curator, writer, and editor for whom curating and editing are often forms of artistic practice. Working both independently and collaboratively, she emphasizes the interrelationships between cultural production and politics, and frequently engages historical inquiry. Ault was one of the cofounders of the influential Group Material, whose practice explored the intersections of art, activism, and politics from 1979 to 1996. Ault’s installation, Afterlife: a constellation, is included in this year’s Whitney Biennial, and she collaborated on Macho Man, Tell It To My Heart: Collected by Julie Ault, an exhibition based on her personal collection, recently at Artists Space, New York; the exhibition traveled to New York from Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel, Switzerland, and Culturgest, Lisbon, Portugal. Other recent exhibitions include Ever Ephermal, Remembering and Forgetting in the Archive at Signal and Inter Arts Center, Malmö, Sweden in 2011, and No-Stop City High-Rise: a conceptual equation, with Martin Beck, for the São Paulo Biennial, 2010. Her edited and authored publications include: (FC) Two Cabins by James Benning (2011); Show and Tell: A Chronicle of Group Material (2010); Felix Gonzalez-Torres, (2006); Come Alive! The Spirited Art of Sister Corita (2006); and Alternative Art New York 1965–1985 (2002).
About the Judith Zabar Visiting Artists Program
In November 2007, Hunter College received a generous commitment to establish the Judith Zabar Visiting Artist Program Fund. The fund has allowed Hunter to bring a series of internationally recognized artists to campus to work directly with students in the MFA program, in master classes, critical seminars, and private tutorials, providing students with the unique opportunity to interact with top practitioners in the field. Zabar Visiting Artists also present public lectures where they discuss their work, engage in conversation with members of Hunter’s faculty, and with Hunter’s broader student community and the general public.
Past Zabar artists have included: Vito Acconci, Janine Antoni, Peter Doig, Charles Gaines, Alfredo Jaar, Joan Jonas, Jeff Koons, Glenn Ligon, Sharon Lockhart, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Christian Marclay, Kerry James Marshall, Tracey Moffatt, Wangechi Mutu, Gabriel Orozco, Elizabeth Peyton, Paul Pfeiffer, William Pope L., Walid Ra’ad, Doris Salcedo, Shahzia Sikander, Fred Tomaselli, Nari Ward, and Carrie Mae Weems.
