The Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai is delighted to announce the launch of the Alternatives to Ritual publications in Chinese and English/German.
Alternatives to Ritual, both as an exhibition and a publication, attempts to look at the crises in exhibition-making and curatorial practice by proposing a reconstruction of the relationships between artist, institution and curator through exploring the exhibition format.
A number of artistic practices emerging in recent years that reflect on the ritual of exhibiting are examined throughout this exhibition, as well as through a number of commissioned texts. This publication proposes a new understanding of what an exhibition can constitute, as well as what function curatorial practice in our current context should perform.
This book has been published in conjunction with the exhibition Alternatives to Ritual, curated by Biljana Ciric and presented by Goethe Open Space in Shanghai September 2012 through March 2013. The exhibition was organized by the Department for Culture and Education of the Consulate General of Germany.
The publications provides in depth examination of the works by Gao Mingyan, Hu Yun, Li Ran, Song Tan, Lu Pingyuan and Hu Xiangqian. Contributors include Nikita Yingqian Cai, Lu Jing, Shen Boliang, Su Wei, Yang Beichen, Xiaoyu Weng and Biljana Ciric.
The English/German version of the publication is co-published by the Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai and the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA), Manchester, UK; the Chinese version is published by the Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the General Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai and beebup publishing house.
