Karen Cordero Reiman will speak on feminism and Mexican art. An art historian, curator, and writer, she is the author of numerous publications on twentieth and twenty-first century Mexican art about the relationship between the so-called “fine” and “popular” arts, gender and sexual identity, and museological and curatorial discourses. Her publications include Construyendo Tamayo, 1922–1937 (Constructing Tamayo, 1922–1937) (2013); “Kati y José Horna: resignificando lo cotidiano” (“Kati and José Horna: Resignifying the Everyday”) in Codo a codo: parejas de artistas en México (Elbow to Elbow: Pairs of Artists in Mexico) (2013); “Sleeping with Cats: A Memoir of Marge Piercy. La autobiografía como relato ficticio en borde de los géneros” (The Autobiography as Fictitious Account on the Edge of the Genres) in Reflejos, interstícios y texturas: Ensayos de teoría literaria aplicada (Reflections, Interstices and Textures: Essays of Applied Literary Theory) (2013); “El legado de Débora Arango: arte, género y política” in Crisisss. América Latina: arte y confrontación 1910–2010 (“The Legacy of Débora Arango: Art, Genre and Politics” in Crisisss. Latin America: Art and Confrontation) (2012).

A professor at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, Cordero also teaches at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and is a founding member of Curare, an independent research center in Mexico City. Cordero did her graduate studies at Yale University and the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico, and in 2000 she was a fellow of the Getty Institute for World Art Studies at the University of East Anglia in Great Britain.

Karen Cordero is a guest scholar of the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics program. The program brings key figures from Latin America to Hunter College to address topics in contemporary art and scholarship through talks with students and the New York community. In addition to this forum, Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics conduct studio visits and seminar discussions with Hunter MFA and MA students during their residency.
