The Master’s Media Design and Communication (lens-based media/networked media) programme is currently considering applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. EU and Dutch applications received before April 1, 2014 will be considered for the academic year starting September 2014. Worldwide applications will be considered for the academic year starting September 2015.

Our curriculum is designed to develop graduates whose practice can move flexibly and fluently across the rapidly expanding field that is developing through the interdependence of computer code and digital image. To name just a few possibilities: transmedia narratives, e-publishing, software art, lens-based practices (combining digital animation, photography, and cinema) and networked practices (combining free and open-source software & hardware development, tactical and participatory media).

The following principles are central to the course:
– The placing of equal value on artistic forms including moving-image production, data-driven and network-based art and cross-platform approaches such as transmedia narrative.
– A strong emphasis on providing students with basic technological skills ranging from computer programming to the cinematography, synthesis and manipulation of digital imagery, from beginners to advanced levels.
– A commitment to open-source and free software development, especially in its implicit hacker attitude to opening up media for experimental purposes.
– The integration of theoretical inquiry, critical analysis and studio-based practice into research methodologies that can support artists practice and artistic research.

The course is taught by staff with international reputations in their respective fields.

Course leader Simon Pummell is a BAFTA-winning filmmaker; MIT Media Lab graduate Michael Murtaugh is a pioneer of the online video Active Archives project, which he presented at dOCUMENTA 13; Aymeric Mansoux is a multi-award winning artist and media researcher; David Haines’ work has been exhibited including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Drawing Room, London; and the 12th Istanbul Biennial; Barend Onneweer founded the award-winning VFX company Raamw3rk; and theory lecturer Steve Rushton is a curator, writer and editor for a range of projects with artists such as Rod Dickinson and Thomson & Craighead.

Core visiting tutors who meet with students on a regular basis include Thomson & Craighead (UK), Femke Snelting (BE/NL), Danja Vasiliev (RU/DE), Hans Wilschut (NL), Annette Wolfsberger (AT/NL), Richard Wright (UK), Aura Satz (UK) and Larry Sider/School of Sound (US/UK), Florian Cramer (DE/NL), and Annet Dekker (NL).
