March 26–30, 2014
Bridges: SGCI Conference
San Francisco Bay area
California
If you’re in San Francisco March 26–29 for the Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI) Printmaking Conference, the Interdisciplinary Arts department at Columbia College Chicago invites you to learn about the breadth of hybrid and social practices that we engage in by attending presentations by faculty members Paul Catanese and Melissa H. Potter.
Interdisciplinary Book & Paper MFA Program Director Melissa H. Potter will be speaking on the panel Between Printmaking and Social Activism, where you will have a chance to learn more about her ongoing curatorial project, Social Paper: Hand Papermaking in the Context of Socially Engaged Art, an exhibition co-curated with Jessica Cochran at the Center for Book & Paper Arts that was recently reviewed in the Chicago Tribune.
Interdisciplinary Arts & Media MFA Program Director Paul Catanese will be speaking on the panel Intermedial Fusions between Photography and Print in an Expanded Art Context as well as the panel Synaptic Leaps: The Interchange of Energies in Contemporary Printmaking, where he’ll be addressing topics including research from his recently co-authored book Post-Digital Printmaking: CNC, Traditional, and Hybrid Techniques, as well as his imaging experiments with rocketry and drones.
Handmade media
In addition to their individual art practices, the past several years Catanese and Potter have been pursuing a collaborative research project titled Handmade Media that explores the intersection of electronic media and handmade paper. This research is conducted at the Center for Book & Paper Arts and the Electronics Laboratory, which are both housed in the Interdisciplinary Arts department. Results include a series of artworks with electroluminescent wire embedded in handmade paper and artworks where handmade voice coils transform two-dimensional paper into speakers. Notably, Catanese and Potter had a month-long exhibition of these works at the Instituto Cultural de Mexico held in conjunction with San Antonio’s Luminaria festival in 2013. This project is a prime example of the hybrid and interdisciplinary practices our faculty and students engage with in the department.
Hybrid practices
The Interdisciplinary Arts department encourages students to embrace the permeable nature of our graduate degree programs to investigate a vast array of offerings including studio courses in artists’ books, hand papermaking, printmaking, video, electronics, sound, interaction, performance, installation, and creative writing, as well as thematic theory/practice courses addressing topics such as autobiographical art, the body, visual narratives, and art + science collaborations.
