California College of the Arts is pleased to announce the 2014–15 lineup of its Four by Four lecture series. The series brings to campus major interdisciplinary practitioners/thinkers working in contemporary fields of relevance to CCA’s students and the broader Bay Area community. The speakers will present their latest work and research.
Each year there are four lectures, two in the fall and two in the spring, each hosted by one of the four different academic divisions at CCA (Fine Arts, Design, Architecture, and Humanities and Sciences).

Tomáš Gabzdil Libertíny

Tomáš Gabzdil Libertíny focuses on exploring conceptual and physical strategies in the design and construction of objects. He founded his studio in 2007 in Rotterdam. In 2001, he was awarded George Soros’s Open Society Institute Scholarship to study at the University of Washington in Seattle. He continued his study at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava in painting and conceptual design. After receiving the prestigious Huygens Scholarship, he enrolled in the Master’s program at the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he received his MFA in 2006.
Jorge Otero-Pailos

Jorge Otero-Pailos is a New York–based architect, artist, and theorist specializing in experimental forms of preservation. His work rethinks preservation as a powerful countercultural practice that creates alternative futures for our world heritage. He is a tenured associate professor of historic preservation at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture and the founder and editor of the journal Future Anterior. His artworks have been exhibited in the Venice Biennale, and are in the collections of major museums and foundations. His writings have been published in Art in America, Artforum, Architectural Record, Abitare, and Volume.
Mauricio Montiel Figueiras

Mauricio Montiel Figueiras is a writer of prose fiction and essays, as well as a translator, editor, and film and literary critic. His most recent books are Señor Fritos (Mister Fritos, 2011), La mujer de M. (The Woman from M., 2012), and Ciudad tomada (City Taken Over, 2013). He has been editor in chief of several cultural magazines and literary supplements, and he has written for many magazines and newspapers, among them the monthly literary journal Letras Libres and El Universal, the biggest Mexican newspaper. His work has also been published in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, England, Italy, Peru, Spain, and the United States. He lives in Mexico City.
Julie Ault

Julie Ault is an artist, curator, writer, and editor. Her work emphasizes interrelationships between cultural production and politics, and frequently engages with historical inquiry. In 1979, Ault cofounded Group Material, whose practice explored the relationship between art, activism, and politics. Her recent exhibitions include Afterlife: a constellation, for the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and the collaboration Macho Man Tell It To My Heart: Collected by Julie Ault at Artists Space, New York (2013). Her CCA lecture will be titled “What Tense Is the Archive?”

Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) offers 22 undergraduate and 13 graduate programs in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing.
