Rupert is now accepting applications for its educational and residency programs.
Rupert’s educational program is a degree-less, non-academic program. Each year it selects a small group of people with aspirations to realize individual projects and offers them practical and theoretical support to enhance and realize them. The program was developed out of a need for combining art education and professional production, establishing knowledge exchange between a group of lecturers, participants, artists, curators and other international creative practitioners and researchers from both within and outside the field of contemporary art as well as fortifying the academic community with a separate brand of self-directed learning while providing individuals with a community.
International and local guests and lecturers involved in the first two editions of the program included Claire Bishop, Sebastian Cichocki, Dora Garcia, Adam Kleinman, Raimundas Malašauskas, Fionn Meade, Dan and Lia Perjovschi, Mårten Spångberg and others.
Guests for the third edition (2014–2015) include Miroslaw Balka, Liudvikas Buklys, Gintaras Didžiapetris, Antanas Gerlikas, Ieva Misevičiūtė, Laure Prouvost, Michael Portnoy, Kasia Redzisz, Juozas Laivys, Isla Leaver-Yap and Jonas Žakaitis. More will be confirmed in the coming months.
The program consists of lectures, workshops and studio visits led by international and local guests, on the basis of which individual feedback on project development is also provided. Rupert is active as both a creative retreat, a suburban international residency and as a hub for civic action. Playing this dual role is crucial to its goal of integrating the local community of Vilnius with that of the international community. For the third edition of the program we have placed a priority in exploring the regions of Lithuania outside Vilnius, to which effect, trips with participants led by artists and other specialists are organized in the regions. In addition to regional events, international collaborations with international institutions, including Studio-X (New York) in 2013 and Komplot (Brussels) in 2014, are organized at the end of each edition, and selected participants get to travel to these locations and participate in labs and exhibitions.
If you are interested in developing a project, an artwork, an exhibition, a film, a book, a magazine, an online platform, an institution, or any other project and want to get involved, submit your application form (available on the website), CV and portfolio (up to five works) at [email protected] by 23 September.
The program will run between October 2014 and June 2015.
This year’s Educational Program is curated by Justė Jonutytė and Maya Tounta.
Rupert’s residency program is suited for local and international thinkers: artists, writers, curators, cultural managers, and academics, providing them with the opportunity to live and work in Vilnius while developing individual projects and immersing themselves in the region’s creative sphere. Run alongside Rupert’s educational, exhibitions and public programs, it also enables residents to benefit from collaboration with these programs that draw participants and mentors from a wide range of complementary artistic backgrounds, as well as attend talks, lectures and workshops by prominent curators, artists and thinkers from all over the world.
Located in the picturesque area of Valakampiai in Vilnius and only a short distance from the city’s flourishing cultural center, Rupert is set by the river Neris and a small river beach, surrounded by peaceful fields and a forest. The residencies are located in a newly constructed building designed by award-winning Lithuanian architect Audrius Ambrasas, operating as an arts incubator which houses a number of creative industries initiatives. Each resident is provided with a fully furnished studio space and mezzanine (approximately 52 square meters) to be used as a production and research space during the residency.
Residency period: January–June 2015
Residency duration: 2-12 weeks
Application fee: 10 euros
To apply, please send your application form (available on the website) along with your CV and portfolio (up to five works) to [email protected] by 1 October.
