As a feature-of-the-month dedicated to Contemporaneity and to the ARTISSIMA art fair in Turin, RESÒ International Network for Art Residencies and Educational Programs is presenting RESÒ traveling box, a nomadic exhibition describing the experience of art exchanges between Cairo, Rio de Janeiro, San Paulo, New Delhi, Cali and Piedmont.

In recent decades and on a global scale, artists’ residencies have come to play a particularly central role in relation to theoretical and critical reflection on new methods of artistic research and production. This also relates to the radical transformation of the art scene itself which, in light of the reshaping of global geography, has seen the emergence of new focuses and new forms of work production and distribution that often intersect with other disciplines.
Within this new context, RESÒ has established itself as a network for international residencies, mobilising artists by way of an IN and OUT format. Founded, supported and promoted by The Foundation for Modern and Contemporary Art CRT of Turin, itwas established in 2010 for joint-projects involving a number of contemporary art institutions in Piedmont.
Initial collaborations for the active residencies featured the urban centres of Cairo, Rio de Janeiro, San Paulo, New Delhi and Cali along with the Piedmont-based partners. Together they developed a platform specialising in the geography of art which is open and receptive to research and in-depth study of contemporaneity.
Between 2010 and 2014 the RESÒ programme has seen the involvement of: Paola Anziché, Franco Ariaudo, Fatma Bucak, Ottavia Castellina, Giorgio Cugno, Dina Danish, Massimiliano and Gianluca De Serio, Frame Works Collective, Eva Frapiccini, Malak Helmy and Nida Ghouse, Francesca Macrì and Irene Pittatore, Jasmina Metwaly, Magdi Mostafa, Amilcar Packer, Alessandro Quaranta, Santiago Reyes Villaveces, Beto Shwafaty, Luisa Ungar, Sunil Vallu, Cosimo Veneziano.
As part of the RESÒ residency, artists are invited to exhibit his/her project publicly both in its first stage, as an introduction to the local scene of the host area, and at the conclusion of the work, to provide feedback and share his/her experience of the RESÒ residency. Now in its fourth year, RESÒ has given 20 artists the opportunity to further their research in Italy, India, Egypt, Colombia and Brazil and has introduced RESÒ/LAB: a form of short residency open to young artists and curators, in partnership with Biruchiy Contemporary Art Project in the Ukraine.

The RESÒ stand at the fair will be entirely dedicated to RESÒ traveling box. Drawing on Duchamp’s idea of The museum in a suitcase and the Time Capsules created between 1974 and 1987 by Andy Warhol, RESÒ traveling box offers the artists involved in the various years of the residency an opportunity to provide a return on their experiences. It is a true Fluxus-kit, a sort of archive of memories and tracks presented as a box of surprises containing works of art, videos and artist multiples. Thanks to an instruction booklet, it can be turned into a touring, modular “do-it-yourself” exhibition, which can be reassembled at any time. After its presentation at ARTISSIMA, RESÒ traveling box will have the opportunity to travel to the foreign institutes involved in the programme and also to art academies, arts centres and design schools.
The artists were not restricted to merely producing something but were also encouraged to study and conduct research in the context of new geographical horizons, where the methodologies and practices are different. They were asked to design an object-document to describe the experiences that they encountered during their residency and, from one year to the next, this will be included in the traveling box.
The tracks contained in the box stimulate reflections and visions of the direction that recent research by contemporary artists is taking, and provide a storyline that unites continents, from South America to North Africa, from the Indian sub-continent, Colombia to Europe, bringing together mega-metropolises and small towns. Focus is placed on the experience of the artists welcomed to residency centres, which are often experimental and whose policies are oriented not only to production but also to forging relationships within the cultural context itself.
