Curated by Carol Solomon with contributions by students in the Haverford College course “Curatorial Praxis: The Making of an Exhibition” (spring 2014).
The first exhibition in the United States devoted exclusively to contemporary art of the Maghreb and the Maghrebi diaspora, Memory, Place, Desire features the works of 13 artists from the North African countries of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and the Maghrebi diaspora. Across media, these artists’ photographs confront home and migration; video installations explore mystical journeys; multi-media forensics preserve traces of the human; and concrete sculptures speak back to socioeconomic injustice.
Publication
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication designed by Random Embassy, Philadelphia, featuring essays by Carol Solomon, PhD, visiting associate professor at Haverford College, and curator of the exhibition; Nadira Laggoune-Aklouche, curator, art critic, and lecturer, Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Algiers, Algeria; Farid Zahi, art critic and researcher, Institut de la Recherche Scientifique, Rabat, Morocco; Rachida Triki, art historian, art critic, and Professor of Philosophy, University of Tunis, Tunisia; and students in Haverford College ICPRH303 “Curatorial Praxis: The Making of an Exhibition” (spring 2014).
