Lucky Dragons
This fall, Occidental College is proud to host its first semester-long Wanlass Artists-in-Residence, Lucky Dragons. Throughout their time on campus they will be engaging the Occidental community by creating art projects and campus interventions. As part of their residency Lucky Dragons have organized an exhibition that remains on view in the College’s Weingart Gallery through November 29.
In their semester at Occidental Lucky Dragons are teaching The Open Score Workshop. This class is a collaborative exploration of the use of scores in the arts and everyday life. The Workshop invites guest artists to be in dialogue with students to explore a range of ideas about the scoring process—from music and art to design and public policy.
From October 29 through November 29, the Open Score Workshop is taking the form of a public presentation in the College’s Weingart Gallery. The collaboratively designed exhibition, titled Anticipatio, uses visual and text-based instructions as prompts for visitor engagement. These scores are simple actions that anyone can do, framing viewers’ experiences as events.
About the artist
Lucky Dragons is an ongoing collaboration between Los Angeles-based artists Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck. Active since 2000, Lucky Dragons explore a participatory and conceptual approach to making music, interactive performances and installations, and playful, humanistic use of digital tools. Their cooperative performances blur the line between teacher and student or performer and audience to create a shared experience and dialogue. Fischbeck and Rara have presented collaborative work in a wide variety of contexts, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, London’s Institute for Contemporary Art, Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.
About OxyArts
The Wanlass artist-in-residence is Occidental’s semester-long residency program that allows an artist to investigate aspects of their practice and share it with the College campus-wide. The program encourages cross-campus collaboration and thoughtful sustained interaction between artist and students. The Wanlass Artist-in-Residence program is made possible by generous support from the Kathryn Caine Wanlass Charitable Foundation.
The recently formed OxyArts Office is a hub for the arts at Occidental College, supporting its exhibitions and public programming. OxyArts engages the campus with a contemporary art dialogue via its Weingart Gallery, campus-wide art projects, and work developed by artists-in-residence. Through OxyArts Occidental aims to actively participate in Los Angeles’s art community, and cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of contemporary art throughout the College community.
