Join us January 20, 2015, at the West Hollywood Public Library Community Room from 7 to 9pm for the first installment of our spring WHAP! Lecture series: “Time, Narration, Politics,” a lecture by Jacques Rancière.

Born in Algiers (1940) Jacques Rancière is Emeritus Professor of Aesthetics and Politics at the University of Paris VIII, where he taught from 1969 to 2000 in the Philosophy department; and professor at the European Graduate School. His work crosses over the fields of social history, politics, aesthetics, film studies and literature. Among his works recently translated into English are Aisthesis. Fourteen Scenes from the Aesthetic Regime of Art (Verso, 2013) and The Intervals of Cinema (Verso, 2014). Previous books include Disagreement: Politics and PhilosophyThe Politics of Aesthetics, On the Shores of Politics, Hatred of Democracy, and The Emancipated Spectator.

The MA Aesthetics and Politics offers a one-year degree that encourages interrogations of the arts and politics in an expanded field. Students specialize in Critical Theory, Global Studies, or Media and Urban Studies and get up close and personal with key contemporary artists and thinkers, including Theorist-in-Residence Judith Butler (spring 2015).

We are currently accepting applications for fall 2015. Apply here.

Financial aid packages are available in the form of scholarships, grants, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships.
