Valand Academy announces the availability of three doctoral candidate positions (third-cycle) in the new subject Artistic Practice commencing spring 2015.
Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg is a dynamic platform for the artist/author/filmmaker/photographer. We are especially focused on artistic interaction and artist-led cultures within contemporary art, film, literature and photography. Valand Academy is centrally situated in Gothenburg and closely integrated with the cultural life of the city, including collaborations with Göteborgs Konsthall, Hasselblad Center, Röda Sten, Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA), Gothenburg’s House of Literature, Gothenburg’s poetry festival and many other cultural initiatives.
We have an extensive international network and partners all over the world including EARN, SHARE, PARSE, SAR and a partnership with Bard CCS.
A particular strength of the research at Valand Academy is the number of perspectives and practices in connection with, and of significance to, contemporary art, film, literature and photography: the curatorial, narrative, poetic, environmental, and queer, and we prefer the applicant to be specialised in one or more of these areas.
Artistic Practice
The doctoral programme in artistic practice is a principal category established in the fields of film, photography, fine art, and literary composition, poetry and prose. Research topics and methods are connected to the specific fields’ contemporary and historical applications, as formulated in the respective subject description at the Valand Academy, and within the framework of the field of artistic practice, encouraging a more in-depth approach within the respective field and cross-fertilisations between fields, something the research environment actively promotes and enables. Development and renewal are essential and cover both practice and critical reflection, which are considered as two interacting components. Of central importance is the doctoral candidate’s own artistic work.
The aim of the third-cycle programme in artistic practice is for the practitioner to become proficiently educated, in both practice and theory, with a focus on the independent and critical creation of a knowledge base in the field, covering both breadth and depth, practice and theory. The aim is also to expand the field’s dialogue with the outside society.
Tasks
Within the framework of the position, candidates conduct research-level studies leading to a doctoral degree. Studies comprise 240 higher education credits (HECs), corresponding to four years of full-time study. The programme consists of a course component of 60 HECs and a dissertation component of 180 HECs. The main aim of the course component is to introduce and develop the research practice of the artistic area and give the candidate a deeper, broader theoretical knowledge and schooling in methodology. The course component is organised partly through obligatory foundation courses, seminars and conferences in a research school run in collaboration with the other two institutions in the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg, and partly through obligatory doctoral seminars at the Valand Academy. The dissertation component covers independent research and practice, which is to lead to completion of a doctoral thesis. The programme leads to a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Arts.
