Nida Art Colony of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (NAC) welcomes proposals from emerging and experienced artists, designers, architects, curators and art researchers/writers/philosophers for its upcoming remote residencies on the Baltic Sea coast in the Curonian Spit National Park, Lithuania.
NAC residencies are most appropriate for those who seek time and professional support for critical thinking, creative process, research, experiments, artistic production, exchange and cooperation of artists as well as those who need a big studio or spectacular open spaces—the Colony is situated about 600 meters away from the sand dunes and the Baltic Sea beach. You could also benefit from meetings with visiting professors and students as well as facilities in more than ten different workshops of Vilnius Academy of Arts in Vilnius.
The Colony provides the necessary living and social conditions to ensure a comfortable environment for the artists-in-residence. Each of the five residencies is set out on two floors with 65 square meters of floor space and is equipped with all the necessary facilities.
The Colony is not only hosting 50 residents per year but also produces shows, publications and educational programmes. In October 2015, when the reconstruction of the last part of NAC building will be over, its size will double and a new department—Nida Doctoral School(NDS)—with a 200-square-meter showroom (white cube/black box), work studios and facilities for performing arts will start operating. The school is launched together with Aalto University (Helsinki). It will be open for other universities and academies to join. The goal of the School is to foster doctoral education in humanities and artistic research and provide intensive courses and residencies for doctoral fellows.
Moreover this year the Colony is organizing Lithuanian Pavilion in the 56th Venice Biennale with a project Museum by the Lithuanian artist Dainius Liškevičius. We invite all our friends and supporters to visit our pavilion from 7 May in Venice.
Please check our Facebook, as well as projects and exhibitions pages for more information on NAC activities. To get a sense of the Colony life and to see A.I.R. portfolios please see the Nida Art Colony Log.
Please follow application guidelines when applying.
Residencies between June 2015 and May 2016
Recommended duration of a residency is two months; possible duration of a residency is one to four months.
The atmosphere and intensity of residencies differs due to natural and social conditions. Please select the period of the year according to your project and needs: in summer Nida is turning into a busy (however not overcrowded) resort; from June 1 to July 15 and throughout September you will have art, architecture and design students in the house; from October to April you will enjoy solitude interrupted from time to time by art professionals or students arriving to the Colony for their workshops.
No grants are currently available; selected candidates are issued a letter of support for individual grant seeking. Studio and living space rent for selected residents is 400 eur/month (300 eur/month in October–May for residents from Lithuania), including all taxes, use of equipment, Wi-Fi, communal spaces and bicycles.
Curatorial proposals
We are looking for curators who could propose and run a thematic residency project at NAC or curate an exhibition from past and present residents. Please check curated residency programme for more information.
Call for a trainee
We are looking for a trainee to work as a curatorial or visual communication assistant of the NAC Artist-in-Residency programme. Please visit our internships section for more information.
